Chapter 6 - The Council's Judgment

The tension inside the high-security conference room of the Moretti compound could cut glass. Seated around the long, obsidian stone table were the five elders of the syndicate—old men who controlled shipping lanes, financial institutions, and political lobbies across Europe and the Americas. At the head of the table sat Rocco Moretti, his posture rigid, holding little Lorenzo in a specialized sling against his chest.

Across the room stood Valentina’s father, Don Salvatore Rossi, a silver-haired patriarch whose face was twisted in calculated fury.

"Rocco, this is an outrage!" Rossi slammed his hand onto the table, rattling the crystal glasses. "You lock my daughter in a parlor like a common criminal based on the word of a maid's child? Where is the proof? Where are the legal indictments?"

Rocco did not raise his voice. When a mafia boss speaks quietly in a room full of capos, everyone listens.

"The proof is right here, Salvatore," Rocco said calmly, sliding a thick file across the obsidian surface toward the elders. "Medical logs from St. Helena Private Hospital, financial transfers originating from Valentina’s personal offshore accounts to Dr. Alistair, and the signed confession of the courier who dropped my son into the kitchen trash bin."

The eldest of the council members, a man named Don Morelli with deep wrinkles etched into his face, slowly opened the file. He scanned the pages carefully, his eyes narrowing as he reviewed the bank routing numbers and the hospital admissions logs.

The room remained dead silent. Every eye in the syndicate watched Don Morelli as he turned the final page, closed the folder, and looked up at Rocco.

"The rules of our families are absolute," Don Morelli spoke in a raspy, gravelly voice. "To betray the bloodline is to invite total ruin. Valentina committed high treason against the house of Moretti."

Rossi’s face turned pale. He stood up abruptly, pointing a trembling finger. "Wait! We can negotiate terms! A settlement—"

"There are no settlements for attempted filicide," Rocco interrupted, his voice dropping into a register so chilling that Rossi instinctively took a step back. "Valentina’s assets are seized. Her lineage is stripped of all titles within the syndicate. She will be exiled to our Sicilian monastery under permanent guard, where she will live out her days in quiet isolation, never to see wealth, power, or society again."

The elders exchanged glances and nodded in unanimous agreement. In the underworld, betrayal of an heir was an unforgivable sin. Rossi realized he had lost; his alliance with Rocco was severed forever, and his daughter’s ambition had destroyed everything in a single night.
