Chapter 3 - The Little Girl's Secret

Rocco knelt. The sound of his heavy knees hitting the polished marble was the only noise in the vast room. At forty-eight, he was a man who rarely lowered himself for anyone, let alone a child. But as he looked down at Sophia Bellini, he realized this barefoot girl in a wet sweater had preserved what his entire security apparatus had failed to protect.

"What is your name?" Rocco asked, his voice losing its lethal edge, replaced by a strange, gravelly softness.

"Sophia, sir," she whispered back, adjusting her grip so the baby’s head remained safely supported against her shoulder.

"Sophia," Rocco repeated, testing the syllables. "You saved someone very important tonight. Why didn't you just leave him there? Why bring him inside?"

Sophia looked down at the infant, who had settled back into a deep, peaceful sleep. "Because it was raining, sir. And babies shouldn't be in the trash. My mother always said even stray cats deserve a dry box when the storm comes. A baby deserves more than that."

Elena sobbed softly from where she knelt on the floor, terrified that her daughter's boldness might provoke the mafia boss's wrath. "Please forgive her, Mr. Moretti. She speaks out of turn. She doesn't know how things work in a house like this."

Rocco stood up slowly, towering over both of them. He extended his hands. "Give him to me."

Sophia didn't hesitate. She carefully transferred the bundle into Rocco’s large, calloused hands. For a fleeting second, Rocco’s fingers brushed against the baby’s soft skin. A jolt—sharp, electric, and undeniable—shot straight through his chest. It was the biological recognition of fatherhood, raw and primitive.

He cradled the infant against his black suit jacket, looking down into the tiny, peaceful face. "He has my eyes," Rocco murmured, almost to himself.

"He does, sir," Sophia said quietly, stepping back to stand beside her mother.

Marcus rushed back into the dining room, breathing heavily, clutching a secure tablet in his hands. His face was pale, slick with nervous sweat. "Boss... you need to see this. We checked the master logs for the eastern wing. The archives for the maternity wing at St. Helena, as well as the private records from our own estate clinic... they've been accessed."

"By whom?" Rocco asked, his eyes never leaving the baby's face.

"By Madam Valentina's personal encrypted terminal," Marcus swallowed hard. "And... there's more. According to the recovered medical database fragments, Madam Valentina never lost the child nine months ago. The miscarriage was forged. She gave birth in secret, at a private clinic funded through an offshore shell company."

Rocco's jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. The betrayal cut deep, not just as a husband, but as a patriarch whose bloodline had been toyed with like a game piece.

"Where is the doctor who oversaw it?" Rocco asked, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper.

"Dr. Alistair. He boarded a private flight to Zurich thirty minutes ago," Marcus replied grimly.

Rocco looked down at the sleeping infant, then glanced at Sophia and Elena. A calculated plan began to form in the sharp, strategic mind of the mafia boss. Valentina thought she could discard his heir and flee. She had severely underestimated the man she married.
