Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Web

The next morning, the sun broke through the heavy rainclouds, casting sharp light across the manicured gardens of the Moretti estate. Inside the master study, Rocco sat behind his heavy mahogany desk. The newborn, now swaddled in clean, silk-lined blankets provided by Elena, slept soundly in a custom bassinet beside him.
Marcus stood across the desk, placing a stack of freshly printed financial and medical dossiers down on the wood.
"The pilot of Dr. Alistair's flight cooperated the moment our Zurich team intercepted them on the tarmac," Marcus reported, adjusting his glasses. "Alistair confessed under minimal persuasion. He admitted that Madam Valentina paid a substantial sum to falsify the birth records, claiming the child was stillborn, while secretly arranging for a trusted courier to smuggle the newborn out of the hospital."
Rocco didn't look up from a document detailing Valentina's offshore accounts. "And the courier?"
"Found in a motel near the docks," Marcus said grimly. "He confessed that Valentina gave him strict instructions to leave the baby in an unmonitored sector of the estate—the kitchen trash bay—so that exposure to the elements would take care of the rest without leaving bullet holes or blood trails."
A cold silence filled the room. Rocco’s fingers traced the edge of the mahogany desk. Valentina’s plot had been calculated, cold, and utterly ruthless. She had underestimated not only Rocco's vigilance but also the unpredictable nature of a little girl walking barefoot in the rain.
A soft knock interrupted their discussion. The heavy door creaked open, and Sophia peeked into the study. She was wearing a neat, new cotton dress provided by her mother, her hair neatly tied back with a blue ribbon.
"May I come in, sir?" she asked softly.
Rocco’s expression instantly softened. The ice in his eyes melted away, replaced by a warmth he hadn't felt in decades. "Come in, Sophia. You don't need to ask permission to enter this room anymore."
Sophia walked over cautiously, her eyes immediately drifting toward the bassinet. She stood on her tiptoes to peek inside. "Is he awake?"
"Not yet," Rocco said, standing up and walking over to stand beside her. "He sleeps like a little soldier. Strong lungs, too."
"What are you going to name him, sir?" Sophia asked, looking up at the towering mafia boss with complete innocence and trust.
Rocco looked down at the infant, then at the brave little girl who had saved his lineage from being extinguished in the dark.
May you like
"Lorenzo," Rocco said softly. "Lorenzo Moretti. Named after my father. And Sophia..." He paused, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Because of you, Lorenzo has a future. From today, you and your mother will never have to worry about the cold, the rain, or anything else ever again."
Sophia smiled brightly, her eyes shining with happiness. But outside the secure gates of the Moretti estate, storm clouds of a different kind were beginning to gather as Valentina’s powerful family syndicates caught wind of her detention.
