Chapter 2 - The Shadows of St. Helena

The silence in the dining hall grew heavy enough to choke. Rocco did not blink. His dark eyes remained fixed on Valentina, whose posture was stiff beneath her silk robe. She had lived in his shadow for five years, playing the role of the devoted, elegant wife of a syndicate leader, but she had miscalculated one vital factor: she had forgotten that Rocco Moretti did not build an empire by trusting coincidence.

"I know many hospitals, Rocco," Valentina replied, her voice steady, though a faint tremor betrayed her pulse at her throat. "St. Helena is private. Wealthy families use it. It is natural that I would recognize the name."

"You didn't just recognize the name," Rocco said, his tone dropping an octave, carrying the terrifying chill of an executioner. "You recognized the bracelet before I even turned it over. You knew its placement. You knew the exact serial format."

Elena Bellini fell to her knees on the cold marble, her hands clasped together in pure terror. "Sir! Please! My daughter meant no disrespect. She is only a child, she didn't understand—"

"Quiet, Elena," Rocco commanded without looking away from his wife.

Sophia did not move away from her mother, but she shifted the baby slightly closer to her chest, whispering a soft shush as the infant stirred. The child opened his eyes for a fraction of a second—deep, dark eyes that mirrored Rocco’s own reflection.

Rocco’s chest tightened. A strange, unfamiliar warmth warred with the ice in his veins. This wasn't just any child abandoned on his estate. The facial structure, the faint mark near the temple—this was blood of his blood. But how? Valentina had supposedly suffered a miscarriage six months into a difficult pregnancy nine months ago, a tragedy that had locked Rocco inside his study for weeks. Or so he had been told.

"Marcus," Rocco called out without turning.

The consigliere stepped forward instantly. "Yes, Boss?"

"Pull the security logs from the private wing, the delivery bay, and the eastern perimeter from forty-eight hours ago to right now. Every camera. Every digital access card. If a single byte has been wiped, find out who authorized it."

"Right away, sir," Marcus said, his eyes darting nervously toward Valentina before he turned sharply on his heel, signaling two elite guards to follow him.

Valentina forced a strained laugh, trying to regain control of the room. "Rocco, are you seriously entertaining the delusions of a maid's daughter over your own wife? This is absurd. Someone from the outside must have breached the perimeter, dropped the child to frame me, or—"

"Or," Rocco interrupted, stepping forward until he stood towering directly over her, "someone inside this house thought they could quietly dispose of a loose end while I was distracted with the port expansion deals."

He reached out and gently, with surprising dexterity for a man accustomed to holding weapons, lifted the edge of the cream-colored blanket. The embroidery on the fabric bore a distinct crest—a custom weave ordered exclusively from a tailor in Milan. The same tailor who supplied the Moretti household linens.

"Recognize the stitch, Valentina?" Rocco asked softly.

Valentina’s face drained of all color. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. She took another involuntary step back, her heel catching the edge of a heavy Persian rug, causing her to stumble slightly.

"Get her to the blue parlor," Rocco ordered the remaining guards. "Lock the doors. Nobody enters, nobody leaves, and no phones in or out. If she moves an inch, chain her to the chair."

"Rocco! You can't do this to me!" Valentina shrieked as two guards grabbed her arms, her composure completely shattering into frantic panic. "I am your wife! I am—"

"You are finished," Rocco finished coldly, watching as she was dragged away down the long corridor.

When the heavy oak doors of the parlor slammed shut, the dining room returned to an eerie, suffocating quiet. Rocco turned his gaze back to the small girl standing by the threshold. Sophia looked up at him, her large, dark eyes holding no fear, only a quiet, fierce determination.
