Chapter 8 - A New Declaration

Two weeks passed following the opening of the vault. The underworld of Milan experienced a seismic shift. With the evidence recovered from the vault, Alessandro swiftly dismantled the remaining cells of the Black Anchor, consolidating his power with unprecedented authority. The other crime families offered absolute loyalty, not out of fear, but out of deep respect for his leadership and fairness.

Yet, despite his immense responsibilities, Alessandro spent every evening at the estate with Emma and me.

The cold, oppressive Villa Moretti was rapidly changing. The silent, terrifying corridors now echoed with the sound of a three-year-old child's laughter. The stoic, stone-faced guards found themselves frequently holding tea party cups or searching for lost crayons under expensive antique tables.

One evening, after Emma had fallen fast asleep in her plush bedroom upstairs, Alessandro invited me to walk through the glass conservatory in the private gardens.

The air inside was warm, filled with the rich scent of blooming orchids and night jasmine.

"You don't have to clean anymore, Clara," Alessandro said softly as we walked along the stone path, his hands casually in his pockets. "I noticed you were trying to polish the silver in the dining room this afternoon."

I blushed, looking down at my hands. "It's hard to break old habits. For two years, I was fighting just to earn enough to buy milk and pay rent. Standing around doing nothing feels... strange."

Alessandro stopped walking and turned to face me. The soft moonlight filtering through the glass ceiling framed his strong silhouette.

"You will never have to worry about rent, or food, or safety ever again," he said, his voice deep and steady. "I have set up a trust fund for Emma. She will have access to the best schools, the best doctors, and every opportunity life can offer."

My heart swelled with emotion, tears stinging the back of my eyes. "Alessandro... you've already done so much for us. You cleared David's name, you protected us..."

"David was a brave man," Alessandro interrupted gently. "He gave his life to protect his family. But I am not doing this out of debt to him, Clara."

He took a step closer, closing the distance between us. He reached out, his long fingers gently taking my hand. His skin was warm, sending a shiver down my spine.

"I am doing this because of you," he murmured, his thumb stroking the back of my hand. "I have spent my entire life surrounded by people who want something from me—power, money, protection. But when you looked at me in that corridor, you didn't see a mafia Don. You saw a man. And when the danger came, you stood your ground to protect your child with more courage than any soldier I have ever commanded."

My breath hitched. "Alessandro..."

"I know where I come from, and I know the blood on my hands," he continued, looking directly into my eyes with breathtaking vulnerability. "I cannot change my past. But I want to build a future. A real one. With you and Emma, if you will allow me."

"Are you asking me to stay?" I whispered, my heart beating frantically against my ribs.

"I am asking you to be my wife," Alessandro said softly, clearly and without hesitation. "Not for politics. Not for show. Because I love you, Clara Bennett. And I will spend the rest of my life ensuring you and Emma are loved and protected."

I stared at him, overwhelmed by the sincerity in his dark eyes. The powerful, feared boss of Milan was offering me his heart—completely bare, completely honest.

May you like

A soft tear escaped my eye, and I smiled, reaching up to gently touch his cheek.

"Yes," I breathed. "Yes, Alessandro. I'll stay."
