Chapter 3 - Secrets of the Vault

The grand hall of Villa Moretti had descended into a pressure cooker of paranoia. Guard units from various families stood back-to-back, hands hovering over concealed weapons, watching each other with intense distrust.

Alessandro gestured for Marco to take us away from the hall. "Take Clara and the child to my private quarters on the third floor. Double the guard outside the door. If anyone who isn't me tries to enter, shoot them."

"Wait!" Vivian stepped into Marco's path, her eyes burning with fury and embarrassment. "You're sending this servant to your private quarters? The master suite? Alessandro, I am your fiancée! We are getting married next month!"

Alessandro paused, looking down at Vivian with absolute detachment. "The key word, Vivian, is were. The engagement was a political arrangement made by my uncle before he passed. You just humiliated yourself, insulted a mother in front of my guests, and proved you have zero discipline. The engagement is off."

The room gasped. Vivian's face flushed a deep, ugly shade of crimson. "You can't do this! My father controls the northern transportation routes!"

"Then your father can come discuss it with me himself," Alessandro replied coldly. "Marco, move them."

Marco ushered Emma and me quickly up the sweeping marble staircase, away from the glares of the mob bosses and Vivian's venomous stare. As we walked down the quiet, carpeted hallways of the upper floor, I could hear the loud, violent arguments breaking out downstairs.

Alessandro's private quarters were massive, lined with dark oak bookshelves, a king-sized bed, and massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the misty grounds of the estate. It smelled of cedarwood, leather, and expensive tobacco.

"Sit down, Mrs. Bennett," Marco said gently, pointing to a plush leather sofa. His aggressive demeanor softened noticeably once we were away from the crowd. "Don't be afraid. The Don isn't going to hurt you or the kid."

"Why did David have that symbol?" I begged, gripping Marco’s sleeve. "He was a good man. He worked long hours, he loved us... he died and left us with nothing but debts!"

Marco sighed, taking off his leather gloves. "David was a good man, Clara. That’s why he died. He wasn't mob. He was a legitimate structural engineer hired by the old Don to design the underground vault beneath the docks. But three years ago, someone inside our organization decided to sell access to that vault to an external syndicate—the Black Anchor. David found out someone was tampering with the security doors."

"And he didn't tell anyone?"

"He tried," Marco said grimly. "He tried to tell Alessandro. But before he could reach him, his boat caught fire at the marina. Official report said a gas leak. But we always knew it was a hit. We just never found the proof... or the key."

"The key?" I repeated.

Marco looked down at the blue rabbit that Emma was now happily hugging on the couch, oblivious to the storm around us. "The old Don had a fail-safe built into the vault. A physical cryptographic key disguised as a micro-stitch pattern. Only two people had the template: the old Don, and the engineer who built it."

My breath hitched. "The rabbit... the symbol isn't just an emblem. It's..."

"It's the blueprint to open the master vault," a deep voice declared from the doorway.

Alessandro stepped into the room, shutting the heavy oak door behind him. He removed his suit jacket, tossing it over a chair, and unbuttoned his collar. He looked tired, but his eyes were sharp, calculating.

"Is everyone downstairs quiet?" Marco asked.

"For now," Alessandro said. "I've placed the families under house arrest until tomorrow morning. Don Ricci is unhappy, but he understands the severity of a leak this high up. Clara, I need you to tell me everything about the day David died."

I took a deep breath, trying to pull memories out of the dark, painful corners of my mind. "It was a Tuesday. David came home late. He was terrified, sweating. He gave me a small velvet bag and told me never to open it unless he didn't come home. But... but that night, men came to our apartment. They ransacked everything while I was at my mother's house with Emma. They turned the place upside down. When I went back, the bag was gone."

"They were looking for the rabbit," Alessandro mused, pacing the room. "Why didn't they find it?"

"Because Emma was sleeping with it," I whispered. "She was holding it under her blanket. They swept the closets, the drawers, the safe... but they didn't check the baby's crib."

Alessandro stopped pacing. He looked down at Emma, who was currently lining up chocolate wrappers on his mahogany coffee table.

"Your husband sacrificed himself to protect that information," Alessandro said softly. "He knew if they found out he had successfully hidden the key, they would come after you and the baby. So he let them believe he died with the secret."

"And now?" I asked, tears brimming in my eyes. "Now that you know... what happens to us?"

May you like

Alessandro walked over to the sofa and knelt once more, bringing himself eye-level with me. The terrifying mob boss of Milan looked at me with a sincerity that made my heart race for a entirely different reason.

"Now," Alessandro said, "you and your daughter are the most valuable people in Italy. And as long as I draw breath, no one touches either of you."
