Chapter 6 - Standing Ground

Through the heavy steel door, I heard the faint muffled sounds of wood splintering inside the study. They were right outside.
I looked around the small safe room frantically. On a side table, there was a heavy metal flashlight and a small emergency flare kit. I had no weapons, no training, but I knew one thing: I would die before I let anyone hurt my daughter.
I placed Emma gently in the farthest corner behind a stack of supply boxes. "Emma, sweetie, stay here and close your eyes. Don't look, no matter what happens."
"Mommy..." she whimpered, holding her rabbit.
"Shh. I love you, baby."
I picked up the heavy iron flashlight, gripping it with both hands, standing directly to the side of the vault door.
Outside, a loud CLANG echoed through the steel. They had found the locking mechanism. The heavy electronic lock chimed as it was forced open from the outside.
The heavy steel door swung inward.
The first mercenary stepped through, his assault rifle raised, scanning the small room.
The second he crossed the threshold, I swung the iron flashlight with every ounce of strength in my body.
CRACK!
The flashlight struck him square across the side of his tactical helmet, disorienting him. He stumbled forward with a grunt. Before he could recover, I kicked him in the back, shoving him into the second mercenary who was trying to enter behind him.
They both crashed to the ground in the doorway.
"Bitch!" the second man yelled, raising his pistol.
Suddenly, a loud gunshot echoed through the study.
The mercenary’s eyes went wide, and he collapsed onto the carpet. Behind him, standing in the doorway of the study covered in rain and blood, was Alessandro.
He fired two quick, precise shots, neutralizing the remaining mercenary instantly.
The room went dead silent, except for the heavy breathing of Alessandro as he lowered his weapon. He scanned the safe room, his eyes instantly finding me holding the bent iron flashlight, standing defensively over the fallen men.
His harsh expression softened into complete shock, followed by a look of profound respect.
"Clara..." he breathed, rushing into the room. He stepped over the fallen men and grabbed my arms, looking me over frantically. "Are you hurt? Did they touch you?"
"We're... we're okay," I gasped, the flashlight slipping from my trembling hands and clattering to the floor. The adrenaline left my body all at once, and my knees buckled.
Alessandro caught me before I hit the floor, lifting me easily into his arms and pulling me tight against his chest. His heart was beating furiously against his ribs.
"You're safe," he murmured into my hair, his voice rough with emotion. "You're safe now. I've got you."
Emma crept out from behind the boxes, holding her blue rabbit, looking up at us with wide eyes. "Did you beat the bad guys, Mr. Sad Man?"
May you like
Alessandro looked down at her, a breathless laugh escaping his lips despite the chaos around us. He lowered me gently to my feet, then reached out and lifted Emma into his other arm, holding both of us close in the dimly lit safe room.
"Yes, little one," Alessandro whispered, pressing a soft kiss to the top of Emma's head. "The bad guys are gone."
