Chapter 7 - The Master Vault

By dawn, the storm had cleared, leaving a crisp, golden morning sun over the grounds of Villa Moretti. The attack had been completely repelled. The Black Anchor forces had been neutralized or captured, and Vivian Romano was handed over to the high council of crime bosses to face justice for her treason.

The remaining eleven mafia families gathered once more, not in fear, but in solemn respect. Alessandro had called them to Port 4 at the Milan docks—the location of the legendary Master Vault.

I stood beside Alessandro on the concrete pier, wrapped in a warm wool coat he had given me. Emma held my hand, clutching her blue rabbit, completely fascinated by the massive ships docked nearby.

Marco stepped up to a heavy, rust-covered steel door set into the side of a concrete embankment beneath the pier. "This is it, boss. The entrance built by David Bennett three years ago."

Alessandro nodded. He turned to me and gently held out his hand. "Clara, may I?"

I looked down at Emma. "Emma, can Mr. Alessandro borrow Mr. Bunny for a minute?"

Emma looked at Alessandro trustingly. "Okay. But give him back, okay? He gets cold."

"I promise, small one," Alessandro said gently.

He took the blue rabbit and approached a high-tech optical scanning device set into the reinforced door—a piece of advanced tech hidden behind an ancient rusty lock plate. He carefully unfolded the rabbit's ear, exposing the black stitched symbol of the raven and anchor, and held it flush against the glass scanner.

A bright blue laser swept over the fabric, reading the exact micro-stitch pattern embedded in the threads.

For three seconds, nothing happened.

Then, a deep mechanical hum resonated beneath our feet. Heavy hydraulic locks disengaged one by one with loud, echoing thuds. The massive six-inch-thick steel door groaned and slowly swung open, revealing a vast, climate-controlled vault illuminated by automatic white lights.

Inside sat row upon row of sealed metal cases containing the entire hidden history of the Northern Italian underworld: ledgers, physical gold reserves, and crucial intelligence files that could either destroy or protect thousands of lives.

Don Ricci, who had accompanied us down to the docks with a small honor guard, let out a breath he seemed to have been holding for years.

"It's all here," the old man whispered in awe. "The late Don's legacy. Protected by an engineer who died protecting his honor."

Alessandro stepped into the doorway of the vault, looking at the massive archive. Then he turned around, looking past the gold and the secrets, directly at me and Emma standing in the morning sun.

He walked out of the vault, ignoring the pile of unimaginable wealth and power behind him. He knelt down in front of Emma and carefully handed her back the blue rabbit.

"Thank you, Emma," he said softly. "You and your rabbit saved my family today."

Emma smiled brightly, hugging the toy. "Mr. Bunny says you're welcome! And you don't look sad anymore."

Alessandro looked up at me, a genuine, breathtaking smile illuminating his sharp, handsome features for the very first time.

"No, sweetie," Alessandro said softly, his eyes locked onto mine. "I'm not sad anymore."
