Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The tension in the grand corridor reached a boiling point. The air became thick with the scent of unspent gunpowder and old, expensive perfume. I reached down, my hands trembling violently, and pulled Emma back against my knees. She didn't cry. She simply clung to her stuffed toy, her wide blue eyes darting between the terrifying man kneeling in front of us and the dozens of suited guards who had subtly shifted their footing, their hands disappearing beneath tailored jackets.

Alessandro did not rise immediately. He kept his fingers resting lightly near the rabbit's ear, his thumbnail tracing the thread of the hidden symbol. Up close, the mark was barely larger than a coin: a stylized raven wrapped around a broken anchor. It was stitched in coarse, matte-black thread, deliberate and hidden beneath a flap of faded blue wool.

"I asked a question," Alessandro said, his voice dropping an octave, terrifyingly calm. He stood up slowly, unfolding his towering frame, turning his back on Vivian as if she no longer existed. "Clara. Where did your daughter get this toy?"

"It... it was a gift," I stuttered, holding Emma tighter. "My late husband, David. He gave it to her the day she was born."

Alessandro’s dark eyes locked onto mine. "David Bennett?"

"Yes," I breathed. "He died three years ago. An explosion at the docks where he worked as an engineer. I... I never thought the toy was anything special. It was just something he bought at a local market."

"Your husband did not buy this at a market," Alessandro said flatly. He raised his hand slightly, and within a second, his trusted second-in-command, a scar-faced man named Marco, stepped forward out of the shadows. "Lock down the estate. No one leaves. Not the capos, not the drivers, not the staff."

A collective murmur of outrage broke out among the twelve families gathered in the main hall. Don Ricci stood up, his heavy hands resting on his cane. "Alessandro, what is the meaning of this? You cannot hold the leaders of the Syndicate hostage over a child's plaything."

Alessandro turned around slowly, facing the twelve powerful men who controlled Northern Italy’s underworld. "This 'plaything' carries the seal of the Black Anchor," Alessandro said, his voice cutting through the room like a blade. "The phantom syndicate that stole three shipments of heavy military arms from my docks six months ago. The group that assassinated my brother four years ago."

Silence slammed down upon the room like a heavy iron door.

Vivian’s breath caught in her throat. She took a step back, her expensive red dress rustling loudly in the quiet. "Alessandro, this is ridiculous. She’s a housekeeper! She probably stole it from somewhere, or her dead beat husband was a petty criminal! You’re humiliating me in front of everyone over garbage!"

"Silence, Vivian," Alessandro snapped without looking at her. "Marco, search the archives for David Bennett. Now."

Marco bowed his head and vanished down the dark hallway leading to Alessandro's private office.

Alessandro looked back down at Emma. The harshness in his eyes seemed to fracture slightly when he met her innocent gaze. He crouched back down, reaching into his inner coat pocket. He pulled out a small, sealed chocolate wrapped in gold foil and offered it to her.

"What do you say, Emma?" I prompted softly, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Emma looked at the gold foil, then up at the formidable mafia boss. She took the chocolate with a polite nod. "Thank you, Mr. Sad Man."

A ghost of a smile touched the corner of Alessandro's lips, gone so fast I thought I had imagined it. "You have a brave daughter, Clara."

"She doesn't know who you are," I murmured honestly.

"Good," he replied, rising to his feet. "Let us keep it that way."

Before another word could be spoken, Marco re-emerged from the dark hallway, his face pale, holding a thick leather-bound folder. He walked straight to Alessandro and whispered something urgently into his ear.

Alessandro’s jaw tightened. His knuckles turned white against the hem of his coat. "Are you certain?" he asked.

"Positive, boss," Marco replied, his voice barely audible to anyone but us. "David Bennett wasn't just a harbor engineer. He was working directly under your father before the old man died. He was the head of security for the primary vault."

Alessandro’s eyes shifted to me, filled with a sudden, intense scrutiny that made my blood run cold. "Your husband didn't die in an accident, Clara. He was murdered because he knew who the mole inside my family was."

May you like

I gasped, pressing my hand over my mouth. "What? No... David was an honest man! He was just a mechanic, an engineer!"

"He was an engineer who built the vault that only five people in this room have access to," Alessandro countered. He turned back to the twelve families, his posture radiating lethal authority. "Someone gave that rabbit to David Bennett. And that someone is sitting in this room."
