Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

Wednesday arrived with heavy, overcast skies, rolling heavy gray clouds over the sprawling estate. Inside the mansion, the tension was palpable enough to cut with a knife.
Victoria spent the morning pacing through the hallways, checking her appearance in every gilded mirror, rehearsing her lines, and ensuring that the fabricated financial audit report sat prominently on the mahogany desk in Dante's study. She had timed everything down to the minute. The decoy private jet was scheduled to touch down at the municipal airfield by 6:00 PM, and Dante's armored convoy would bring him back to the gates by 7:00 PM sharp.
Up in the children's wing, Grace was packing a small bag for Emma and Chloe, anticipating that Victoria might try to escalate her cruelty the moment Dante walked through the door.
"Grace," Chloe whispered, tugging at the sleeve of her apron. "Is father really going to be mad at us? Victoria told us he hates when people make mistakes."
Grace picked Chloe up, holding her close against her chest. "Your father loves you more than anything in this world, Chloe. He would never let anything bad happen to you. Trust me."
Down in the subterranean command center, Dante heard every word through the room's high-gain audio monitoring system. He stood before the full-length mirror, adjusting the cuffs of a custom-tailored charcoal suit. His expression was carved from granite. Marcus stood nearby, holding a heavy tactical briefcase containing the pristine, unedited master recordings of the past seventy-two hours.
"All systems are locked and mirrored, Boss," Marcus confirmed, handing the briefcase to Dante. "The local network has captured every keystroke Victoria made, every malicious act she committed against the children, and every conversation she had with her outside associates confirming her plot to usurp control of the estate."
"Good," Dante said, his voice deep and resonant. "Is the perimeter team in position?"
"In place. The estate is completely sealed. No unauthorized communications can leave or enter the property. When she tries to present the forged audit tonight, the trap will spring from every angle."
"Let's go," Dante said.
Instead of taking the main entrance where the convoy would arrive, Dante and Marcus moved through the subterranean service tunnel that led directly to the lower level of the mansion, emerging quietly behind the service stairwell just as the heavy rumble of armored vehicles echoed from the front gates.
Upstairs, the heavy oak front doors swung open.
Victoria's voice rang out through the foyer, dripping with practiced sweetness and artificial sorrow.

"Dante! Oh, thank goodness you're back safely. You have no idea how stressful these past few days have been with you gone..."
The game was over. The trap was set. And the hunter was finally stepping out of the shadows.
