Chapter 4 - The Forged Ledger

The next forty-eight hours stretched like a taut wire. Victoria operated with the reckless confidence of someone who believed she was the undisputed queen of the castle. With the staff reduced to a skeleton crew loyal only to her intimidation, she tightened her grip on the household routines.
Down in the subterranean command center, Dante and Marcus watched every minute unfold.
It was Tuesday afternoon when Victoria made her next major move. On the multi-split monitor, Victoria was seen entering Dante's private study—a sanctuary that no one, not even his top lieutenants, was permitted to enter without explicit invitation.
She carried a sleek leather folder under her arm.
"She's going for the corporate accounts," Marcus noted, leaning closer to the main console as he typed a series of rapid commands. "She's accessing the offshore ledger interface using the master override code she secretly recorded from Dante's desk drawer last month."
On screen, Victoria sat in Dante's leather chair, typing furiously. Her face was flushed with excitement, a manic gleam in her eyes. She wasn't just looking; she was altering financial records.
"She's planting fraudulent transfer logs," Marcus observed, his voice hardening. "Routing company funds from subsidiary accounts into a private offshore account registered under Grace's maiden name—the one Grace used before she entered our employment vetting system years ago."
Dante stood behind Marcus, watching the data streams populate in real-time on a separate terminal. Every keystroke Victoria made was logged, timestamped, and simultaneously backed up to an encrypted external drive.
"She's thorough," Dante remarked, his tone dangerously detached. "She thinks she can paint Grace as a corporate spy who embezzled millions over the last three years, giving her the 'justification' to fire her—and worse, hand her over to federal authorities."
"Should we lock her out of the system now, Boss?" Marcus asked, his hand hovering over the kill switch.
"Never interrupt an enemy while they are making a fatal mistake," Dante replied, quoting an old maxim with chilling precision. "Let her finish the transfer. Let her complete the digital trail. When she presents those fabricated documents to me upon my 'return,' she will lock herself into a legal and criminal trap from which there is no escape."
Upstairs, on the live audio feed, they heard Victoria whisper to herself as she hit the final save button on the terminal: "Goodbye, housekeeper. And goodbye, little brats. Once Dante sees these files, you'll all be out on the street."
Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Grace was quietly preparing lunch for Emma and Chloe. The girls sat at the island counter, drawing in their sketchbooks. The atmosphere was subdued, heavy with the oppressive weight of Victoria's constant supervision, yet infused with a quiet solidarity.
Grace gently set down two plates of sandwiches. "Eat up, girls. We have to finish tidying the library before evening."
Emma looked up, her eyes wide with concern. "Grace... Victoria said some things this morning. She said when father comes back, everything is going to change. She said we won't see you anymore."
Grace's heart skipped a beat. She forced a reassuring smile, kneeling beside Emma's chair.
"Don't you worry about that, sweetheart," Grace said, gently squeezing Emma's small hands. "Your father trusts me. He knows me. Whatever she's planning, truth always comes to light in the end."
Hidden behind a structural pillar just outside the kitchen archway, a tiny pinhole camera—installed by Marcus weeks prior—captured every reassuring word, transmitting crystal-clear audio down to the dark room below.
In the command center, Dante stared at Grace's face on the screen. For a fleeting second, the cold, impenetrable facade of the mafia boss softened, replaced by a deep, unwavering resolve.

"She has no idea what's coming," Marcus said quietly.
"No," Dante replied, turning away from the screen to inspect his tactical gear on the armory rack against the far wall. "And neither does Victoria. Prepare the retrieval team. The return date is set for tomorrow evening."
