Chapter 1 - The Trap Laid in Silence

They set hidden cameras to expose me, the housekeeper they thought had betrayed the family for years. Instead, those cameras caught the mafia boss's fiancée terrorizing his little daughters, and while she believed she had complete control, the man she was fooling was already watching from a dark room inside the mansion.

My name is Grace, and for years I helped raise Emma and Chloe while their father built an empire that most people were too afraid to even mention. To the world, he was a powerful businessman. I knew the truth. He was a mafia boss who loved his daughters more fiercely than anything else.

Lately, though, something had changed.

Victoria, the woman he planned to marry, watched me like I was an intruder in my own workplace. Every missing item became my fault. Every hug the girls gave me became another reason for her to whisper poison into his ear.

She smiled sweetly whenever he was around.

The second he looked away, her eyes turned cold.

Then one evening, he announced he had an urgent business trip to New York.

Emma's shoulders dropped.

"So soon?" she asked.

Little Chloe just stared at her breakfast, squeezing her spoon until her knuckles turned white.

I wanted to comfort them, but I stayed quiet.

The next morning, he hugged the girls goodbye and drove away. The mansion settled into its usual silence, and I focused on cleaning the kitchen, trying to ignore the knot in my stomach.

For a while, everything felt normal.

Then the last staff member left.

The front door clicked shut.

Victoria walked into the living room.

The smile she'd worn all morning disappeared.

"What did I tell you about sitting here?" she snapped.

Both girls froze instantly.

Emma closed her book without a word. Chloe clutched her stuffed bunny until Victoria snatched it away and tossed it across the room.

"When your father isn't home, you listen to me the first time."

I couldn't stay silent.

I stepped between her and the girls.

"Miss Victoria," I said as calmly as I could, "they haven't done anything wrong."

She turned toward me with a slow smile that made my skin crawl.

"Did I ask for your opinion?"

"No, ma'am."

"Then remember your place."

Behind me, I felt Emma take Chloe's trembling hand.

That tiny gesture told me this wasn't the first time they'd been afraid of her.

Before I could speak again, Victoria stepped closer until we were almost face-to-face.

She slowly lifted her hand toward me.
