Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

Deep within the subterranean levels of the mansion, far below the wine cellar and the reinforced panic rooms, lay the command center. To anyone else, it was a sealed utility room behind a heavy biometric vault door. To Dante Salvatore, it was the nervous system of his entire empire.

The room was bathed in the cool, rhythmic glow of dozens of high-resolution monitors. Banks of servers hummed a low, continuous bass note, processing encrypted data feeds from across the globe.

Dante sat in a leather executive chair, his fingers steepled in front of his lips. He wore a crisp black shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing the faint, jagged scars of a life carved out of violence. A glass of amber bourbon sat untouched on the mahogany desk beside him.

On the main central monitor, a multi-split display showed crystal-clear, high-definition footage of the living room upstairs.

Every word, every tremor in the girls' voices, every malicious smirk on Victoria's face—it had all been captured with pristine audio and visual fidelity.

Dante hadn't gone to New York.

The private jet had taken off on schedule, carrying decoy body doubles and an empty cabin to throw off rival syndicates tracking his movements. Within twenty minutes of takeoff, a bulletproof helicopter had quietly landed on the estate's rear helipad, whisking Dante back into the heart of his own home through a private subterranean tunnel.

He hadn't moved since reviewing the live feeds. His dark, impenetrable eyes stared at the screen, unblinking, fixed entirely on the frozen image of Victoria's hand gripping Grace's wrist.

A soft chime sounded from the console. A figure stepped out of the shadows near the server racks—Marcus, Dante's head of security and longtime confidant. Marcus's expression was grave, his arms crossed over his broad chest.

"The perimeter is secure, Boss," Marcus reported in a low, flat tone. "No external leaks. Communications from the estate are currently being routed through our local loop, exactly as you ordered. Victoria's phone calls, texts, and social media updates are all being mirrored here."

Dante didn't look away from the screens. His voice, when he spoke, was dangerously quiet—devoid of rage, carrying instead the chilling, absolute calmness of an executioner about to drop the blade.

"She thought she was being clever," Dante said softly. "She assumed that because I travel, I am blind."

"She miscalculated," Marcus agreed. "Shall we remove her from the premises now? A team can have her disposed of—quietly, outside state lines—before sunrise."

Dante raised a single hand, signaling Marcus to wait.

"No," Dante said, his gaze shifting to the secondary monitor where Grace was still holding Emma and Chloe, whispering words of comfort. "A swift death is a mercy she hasn't earned. She dared to bring fear into my home. She dared to terrorize my daughters while wearing the face of a trusted partner."

Dante stood up slowly. His imposing frame cast a long shadow across the banks of monitors.

"She wants control of this house, Marcus? Let her have it. Give her every illusion of absolute power. Let her dig her own grave deeper with every hour."

"And the housekeeper?" Marcus asked, glancing at Grace on the screen. "Victoria has been compiling false financial discrepancies against her for weeks. She's set up a trap to frame Grace for embezzlement."

A faint, grim smile touched the corner of Dante's mouth.

"Grace is the only reason my daughters have retained their sanity under this roof," Dante said firmly. "Let Victoria play her game. We are watching every move. Every lie she tells, every threat she utters, every document she forges—archive it all."

Dante picked up his glass of bourbon, swirling the amber liquid as he watched Victoria on the screen stride back down the hallway toward the master kitchen.

"When the trap springs," Dante murmured, "it won't catch Grace. It will crush Victoria completely."
