Chapter 9 - Scars into Sanctuary

The autumn leaves turned golden across the grounds of the Blackwood estate.

On a bright, clear Saturday afternoon, the grand garden was decorated with white ribbons and fresh lilies. There were no heavy security guards standing in sight, though the perimeter remained the safest place in the country. There were no reporters, no business associates using the event for leverage, and no dark secrets hidden in the shadows.

Only a small gathering of true friends, the staff who had become family, and the people whose lives had been rebuilt.

Lily stood before a long oval mirror in the grand suite. She wore an elegant, simple A-line gown of ivory silk, with long lace sleeves that covered her arms—including the jagged scar from her past. But she no longer felt the need to hide the scar out of shame; it was simply a mark of the path she had survived to reach this moment.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

"Come in," Lily called out.

The door opened, and Victor stepped inside. He wore a crisp black tuxedo, his hair brushed back, looking every bit the formidable man he was, but his eyes were completely soft as he looked at her.

He stopped at the threshold, taking her in.

"You look breathtaking," Victor said, his voice husky.

Lily walked toward him, taking his offered hands. "You don't look so bad yourself, Mr. Blackwood."

"I am the luckiest man in this city," Victor replied, pulling her close. He reached into his coat pocket and brought out a small velvet box. He opened it, revealing a stunning ring made of platinum, set with an emerald surrounded by clear diamonds.

"This belonged to my grandmother," Victor explained softly. "She was a woman who survived wars and rebuilt her family from nothing. She was the strongest person I knew... until I met you."

He took her left hand, slipping the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly.

"Lillian," Victor spoke, looking deep into her eyes. "You came into my life when my home was broken, my son was in danger, and my heart was frozen. You protected my child with your life, and in doing so, you saved mine too. I promise to spend the rest of my days protecting your peace, loving you without end, and giving you the home you have always deserved."

Lily’s eyes filled with happy tears. She leaned up on her tiptoes, wrapping her arms around his neck. "I love you, Victor. I love the life we've made, and I love the man you are."

He leaned down and kissed her—a soft, deep promise forged in the fires of their pasts and bound by the bright future ahead of them.
