Chapter 7 - Bloodlines and Betrayals

An hour later, the warehouse was cleared. Derek Sterling and his men were turned over to a specialized federal unit with a mountain of evidence linking them to interstate crimes—evidence carefully assembled by Victor's network overnight. Derek would spend the rest of his natural life behind bars in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, never able to walk without a cane, and never able to threaten anyone again.

Victor returned to the Blackwood estate as the sun reached its peak in the sky.

When he walked into the main hall, he found Lily sitting in the courtyard garden with Ethan. The baby was sitting on a soft blanket, playing with a set of wooden blocks using his uninjured right hand, laughing softly as Lily built small towers for him to knock down.

The sight was so quiet, so pure, that Victor stopped at the glass doors just to watch them. For years, he had lived in a world of violence, corruption, and dark power. He had accepted that his life was meant to be lived in the cold shadows. But looking at Lily, he saw a warmth that he desperately wanted to bring into his world.

He opened the doors and walked into the garden.

Lily looked up, her face lighting up with relief when she saw him unharmed. "You're back."

"I am," Victor said, sitting down on the stone bench beside her.

Ethan babbled happily, reaching his good hand out toward his father. Victor leaned down, letting his son grab his pinky finger with his tiny hand.

"It's over, Lillian," Victor said softly.

Lily froze, her heart catching in her throat. "What do you mean?"

"Derek Sterling has been arrested by federal agents," Victor explained clearly. "His entire syndicate has been dismantled. He will spend the rest of his life in prison. He will never hurt you, look for you, or step near you ever again. You are free."

Lily stared at him, processing the words. Two years of living in terror, of looking over her shoulder at every shadow, of jumping at every loud noise... gone in an instant.

Tears welled up in her eyes, but this time they were tears of overwhelming relief. She covered her face with her hands, her shoulders shaking as she sobbed softly.

Victor didn't hesitate. He pulled her into his arms, drawing her tight against his chest. Lily didn't shrink away; she buried her face into the crook of his neck, clinging to his jacket as the weight of her past finally dissolved.

"Thank you... thank you, Victor," she sobbed into his shoulder.

"You don't need to thank me," he murmured, his arms wrapping around her protectively, his chin resting against her soft hair. "You brought my son back to me. You saved his life. I will protect yours for as long as I live."

From the house, Arthur walked out onto the patio, holding a folder. He paused, seeing the embrace, and hesitated before speaking.

"Mr. Blackwood," Arthur said quietly. "The authorities have arrived for Serena Montague. The state prosecutor is filing charges for attempted murder, child endangerment, and fraud."

Victor didn't let go of Lily, keeping one arm firmly around her waist. "Tell the prosecutor to ensure she receives the maximum sentence. No bail. No deals."

"Understood, sir," Arthur said, bowing his head before returning inside.

Lily pulled back slightly, looking into Victor's eyes. "What happens now?"

Victor looked down at Ethan, who was now crawling onto Lily’s lap, yawning sleepily. Then he looked back at Lily.

May you like

"Now," Victor said softly, "you stay here. Not as a nanny, and not as an employee. As a woman who belongs in this home, if that is what you want."

Lily felt a warmth spread through her chest—a feeling she had never experienced in her life. "I want that, Victor. More than anything."
