Chapter 3 - Veils Dropping

The drive back to the Blackwood estate was executed in absolute silence. The heavy rain that had been threatening all afternoon finally broke, hammering against the dark glass of the SUV. Lily sat in the back with Ethan, who was resting fitfully under the influence of a mild, safe painkiller administered by Dr. Wells.
When the heavy iron gates of the estate swung open, the mansion loomed like a fortress against the storm. Security guards in sleek black suits were positioned every ten yards along the driveway, their hands resting near their holsters.
Victor stepped out first, opening Lily’s door himself. He reached in, taking Ethan into his left arm with an ease that belied his towering frame, while extending his right hand to help Lily stand. She hesitated before placing her hand in his. His grip was firm, warm, and steady.
"Walk behind me," Victor instructed as they entered the grand foyer.
The marble floor had been wiped clean of the blood and dirt, but the tension in the air was palpable. Sitting on the velvet sofa in the center of the living room was Serena Montague. She was nursing a glass of crystal cognac, though her composure was rapidly crumbling. Two of Victor’s senior enforcers stood like statues on either side of the doorway.
When Victor entered, Serena stood up immediately, putting on a face of righteous indignation.
"Victor! This is ridiculous!" she spat, pointing a manicured finger at the guards. "Your thugs locked the gates! They confiscated my phone! Is this how you treat your fiancée? I was terrified for Ethan! I was trying to protect him from that... that crazy woman!"
She pointed dramatically at Lily, who shrank back slightly into Victor's shadow.
Victor didn't answer right away. He walked to the bassinet set up in the adjoining corner of the study, gently placed Ethan inside, and engaged the monitoring system. Only then did he turn to face Serena.
"The doctor examined Ethan," Victor said, his voice flat.
Serena’s posture stiffened slightly, but she maintained her posture. "And? Did he confirm he was dropped? I told you, Lily was negligent—"
"He has a spiral fracture in his left arm caused by severe physical force," Victor cut her off cold. "And his toxicology report came back positive for concentrated Benzodiazepines."
The glass in Serena’s hand trembled. A drop of amber liquid spilled over the rim, falling onto her pristine dress. "That... that’s impossible. Lily must have been giving him something to make him sleep so she didn't have to work!"
"The poison came from your residence, Serena," a new voice broke in.
From the shadow of the hallway stepped Arthur, Victor’s chief investigator—a gray-haired man with eyes like scalpel blades. He carried a tablet and a clear plastic evidence bag.
"We searched Miss Montague’s vehicle under authority of estate security," Arthur reported, standing beside Victor. "Inside her purse, we found a bottle of liquid pediatric sedatives, prescribed to an alias under her mother's maiden name. We also found these."
Arthur held up a folder containing several thick financial documents.
"Miss Montague has accumulated over four million dollars in gambling debts across offshore casinos in Macau and Antigua," Arthur continued calmly. "Her family's estate is entirely bankrupt. The engagement to you, Mr. Blackwood, was her family's final attempt to avoid liquidation."
Serena’s face drained of all color. The polished, aristocratic facade shattered, revealing the desperate, vicious woman beneath.
"Victor, listen to me," she stammered, stepping toward him. "It’s not what it looks like! I needed money... my family was being threatened! I didn't mean to hurt the boy! I just needed him to be quiet! I needed you to marry me faster so the offshore accounts could be cleared!"
"You poisoned a infant for leverage," Victor said. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't show anger. That was what made him terrifying. The absence of emotion was a death sentence. "You laid hands on my son. You struck the woman protecting him."
"You can't do anything to me!" Serena shrieked, dropping all pretense. "My father is a senator! If I disappear, if I am harmed, the federal task force will rip this city apart looking for you!"
"Your father sold his last favor three months ago to pay off his own tax fraud," Victor replied coldly. "He has no power left. And as of five minutes ago, every contract between the Montague estate and Blackwood Enterprises has been dissolved. You are broke, Serena. And you are at my mercy."
Victor motioned to his guards. "Take her to the lower holding room. No phone calls. No visitors. She stays there until I decide which authority will receive her—or if she receives my personal justice."
"Victor! No! You can't do this! Lily is a nobody! She's a liar!" Serena screamed as the guards seized her arms, dragging her backward out of the room. Her heels scraped uselessly against the hardwood as her screams faded down the distant corridor.

Silence returned to the room, heavy and absolute.
Victor turned to Lily. "Now, Lily. It's time for your truth."
