Chapter 8 - The Reckoning at Dawn

Six months passed.

The dark clouds that had hung over the Blackwood estate for years seemed to evaporate completely.

Serena Montague had been convicted on all counts, sentenced to twenty years in a state penitentiary without the possibility of parole. Her family's legacy was completely erased from Chicago society. Derek Sterling was serving a life sentence in Colorado, his name forgotten by the underworld he once tried to rule.

In contrast, the Blackwood mansion had changed.

The cold, sterile halls lined with marble and shadow were now filled with light and warmth. Yellow roses bloomed in the interior courtyard, planted by Lily. The sound of children's laughter echoed through the high-ceilinged corridors every afternoon.

Ethan’s arm had healed completely, leaving no permanent damage. At twenty months old, he was running through the house, full of energy and health, his cheek chubby and bright.

Lily sat at the long mahogany dining table, reviewing documents for the new foundation Victor had established in her name—the Lillian Vance Shelter for Women and Children, dedicated to providing safe houses, legal aid, and security for survivors of domestic abuse across the state.

Victor walked into the room, wearing a simple linen shirt instead of his usual dark, formal suits. He walked over to where she sat, placing his hands gently on her shoulders, leaning down to kiss the crown of her head.

"You're working late," Victor remarked softly, his voice full of an easy warmth that only she ever heard.

"I wanted to make sure the legal paperwork for the new shelter in Detroit was finalized," Lily said, turning her head to look up at him with a gentle smile. "We're opening next month. We've already secured thirty beds and a full security team."

"Marcus is personally overseeing the security personnel," Victor said, pulling up a chair beside her. "No one will touch those women. You have built something incredible, Lillian."

"We built it," Lily corrected softly, placing her hand over his. "You gave me the power to turn my worst memories into a refuge for others."

Ethan came toddling into the room, dragging a stuffed bear behind him. He reached Victor's chair and banged his small hand against his father's knee.

"Daddy! Li-Li! Up!" Ethan demanded, his speech improving every week.

Victor chuckled, picking up his son with one arm and settling him onto his lap. Ethan immediately leaned over and patted Lily’s cheek with his tiny hand.

"Li-Li stay?" Ethan asked, looking between the two of them with wide, bright eyes.

Victor looked at Lily, his gray eyes shining with an intense, steady affection that made her breath catch.

"Yes, Ethan," Victor said softly. "Li-Li stays forever."
