Chapter 5 - When Lions Hunt

By sunrise, the rain had ceased, leaving the city washed in a gray, misty dawn. Victor stood by the French doors of his bedroom, watching the fog roll off Lake Michigan. He was wearing a fresh dark suit, his tie neatly knotted.

Arthur walked into the room without knocking, holding a fresh intelligence brief.

"We have a situation, boss," Arthur said.

Victor didn't turn around. "Speak."

"Derek Sterling hit Chicago three days ago," Arthur reported. "It seems he never stopped searching for his wife. He tracked the fake identity paperwork she purchased two years ago through a corrupt clerk in Cook County. He knows she’s in the city."

Victor turned slowly, his eyes cold and dangerous. "Does he know she is here?"

"Not yet," Arthur replied. "He’s currently operating out of an abandoned warehouse near the south docks, making inquiries through local low-level bookies. He brought eight heavily armed men with him from Detroit. He’s planning to drag her back tonight if he finds her location."

A dark, cruel smile spread across Victor’s face. "He came to my city looking for a victim. He doesn't realize he walked into a slaughterhouse."

"What about Serena?" Arthur asked.

"Keep her locked below," Victor commanded. "We will hand her over to the federal authorities once Sterling is dealt with. Let her sit in the dark and contemplate the life she threw away."

Victor walked out of his room and headed down the wide staircase to the nursery. Inside, Lily was sitting in a rocking chair, holding Ethan, who was sleeping peacefully, his tiny white cast rested against her chest. She looked exhausted, dark circles under her eyes, but her expression was one of absolute devotion.

Victor stood at the doorway for a moment, watching them. A rare feeling of warmth bloomed in his chest—a feeling he hadn't experienced since his wife passed away four years ago during Ethan's birth. For years, he had viewed his home as merely a fortress, a place to hide his son from his dangerous life. But seeing Lily here, holding Ethan like he was her own flesh and blood, made the house feel like a home again.

"Lillian," Victor called gently.

Lily looked up, offering a tired smile. "He slept through the night. The doctor's pain medicine worked well."

"Good," Victor said, stepping inside. "I am leaving for a few hours to handle some business matters."

Lily's smile faded slightly, replaced by concern. "Is it about Serena?"

"It's about making sure you and Ethan are never threatened again," Victor said directly. He reached into his coat pocket and handed her an encrypted panic device. "This button connects directly to Marcus and twenty armed men stationed throughout the property. If anyone you don't recognize steps onto this floor, press it. But you are safe here. No one gets past my perimeter."

Lily accepted the small device, her fingers brushing against his. "Please be careful, Victor."

Victor paused at the sound of his name on her lips. He leaned down, placing a hand on her shoulder, squeezing gently. "I always am."
