Chapter 4 - Echoes of the Past

Lily sat in the private study, a mug of warm tea held tightly between her small hands. The room was lined with floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves, smelling of old paper and expensive leather. Victor sat behind his massive desk, his hands clasped together, watching her attentively.

"I won't hurt you," Victor said softly, noticing how her shoulders were still tense. "You saved my son. You are safe in this house. But I cannot protect you from what I do not know."

Lily stared into her tea, the steam rising between them. She took a deep breath, letting the wall she had built over the last two years slowly crumble.

"My real name isn't Lily Parker," she began softly. "It's Lillian Vance."

Victor’s eyebrows twitched slightly, a subtle signal that he recognized the name. "Vance? As in Vance Logistics in Detroit?"

"Yes," Lily said, her voice barely a whisper. "My father was Arthur Vance. When he died three years ago, his business partner took over the company. His name is Derek Sterling."

Victor’s eyes narrowed. "Derek Sterling. A mid-level enforcer who used human trafficking and stolen freight to build an empire in the Midwest."

"He forced me to marry him," Lily said, a tear slipping down her cheek. "He said it was the only way to retain my father's shares. I was young, terrified, and completely alone. But after the wedding... the nightmare began. He was cruel. He treated me like property. If I spoke back, if I looked at him wrong, if his business went poorly... he used his fists."

She pulled back the sleeve of her sweater, showing a long, jagged scar running from her wrist to her elbow.

"I tried to leave once," she continued. "He found me at a bus station, brought me back, and did this with a broken bottle. He told me that if I ever ran again, he would track down anyone who helped me and kill them in front of me. He said nobody believed a runaway wife against a powerful man."

Victor’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. His hand tightened into a fist on top of the desk.

"Two years ago, he was drunk," Lily whispered. "He hit me, and I hit him back with a brass lamp. I thought I had killed him. I ran out into the snow with no shoes, no money, nothing. I caught a freight truck to Chicago, changed my name, paid cash for a fake ID, and hid in plain sight. When I saw your ad for a nanny... I took it because I thought a man with your reputation would keep any bad people away."

She looked up at Victor, her eyes wide with vulnerability. "I'm sorry I lied to you about who I was. I'm sorry for bringing my dangerous past into your home."

Victor stood up from his chair. He walked around the desk, stopping right in front of her. He leaned down, placing his hands on the arms of her chair, trapping her gently in his sphere of presence.

"Listen to me very carefully, Lillian," Victor said, his voice echoing with an absolute certainty that chilled her to the bone. "You didn't bring danger to my house. Danger lived here under the name Serena Montague. You brought life back into this house. You protected my son when I was too blind to see his pain."

He reached out, his long thumb gently wiping away a tear from her cheek. His touch was surprisingly soft for a man whose hands carried so much darkness.

"Derek Sterling is a worm," Victor said coldly. "He operates on fear because he has no real power. He is nothing compared to what I command. If he ever sets foot in this city, if he even thinks your name, I will erase him from existence."

Lily looked into Victor's gray eyes and, for the first time in three years, felt a deep, profound sense of safety.

"Thank you, Mr. Blackwood," she breathed.

"Call me Victor," he replied quietly. "Now, go to sleep. Tomorrow, everything changes."
