Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

Lorenzo dealt with Tommy Vance with the silent, brutal efficiency that had made the Rossi family legendary. The threat to Hunter was eliminated before she even knew it existed. But Lorenzo’s actions sparked a chain reaction.
The remaining splinter factions of the Moretti crime syndicate, desperate to reclaim their lost territories and furious over the loss of their Atlantic City operations, realized that Don Lorenzo Rossi had a new vulnerability.
Reports from security cameras around the Rossi estate revealed that Lorenzo was no longer a lone wolf bent on destruction. He had a child who was thriving, and a soft-spoken, beautiful woman who spent every afternoon walking through the private estate gardens with the heir.
Inside the mansion, the line between duty and desire had blurred completely.
One late night, after Leo had fallen into a deep sleep, Hunter walked into the ground-floor library to return a book. She found Lorenzo standing near the fireplace, a glass of scotch in his hand, looking out at the stormy Atlantic ocean.
"You should be resting," Lorenzo said softly, turning around. His dark eyes softened the moment they rested on her.
"So should you," Hunter replied, walking closer. "You've been working late every night, Lorenzo. You look tired."
"I have spent my whole life surrounded by enemies, Hunter," Lorenzo admitted, taking a step toward her. "I used to think fear was the only thing that could keep me safe. But lately... when I see you with Leo, when I hear you laugh in this empty house... I find myself terrified of losing something I never thought I'd have again."
Hunter’s heart beat wildly in her chest. She looked into his dark, intense eyes and saw no monster—only a man who loved fiercely and protected ruthlessly.
"You won't lose us, Lorenzo," she whispered.
Lorenzo reached out, his warm, rough fingers gently caressing her jawline. "I didn't think my heart was capable of beating for anyone else after Sophia. But you came into this house like a light in absolute darkness, Hunter. You saved my son. And God help me, you saved me."

Before Hunter could answer, Lorenzo leaned down and pulled her into a deep, desperate kiss. It was a kiss born of shared pain, survival, and an overwhelming passion that had been building between them for months. Hunter wrapped her arms around his neck, sinking into his warmth, knowing in her heart that she had fallen completely in love with the mafia boss.
Their moment of peace, however, was shattered by the deafening sound of an explosion near the outer perimeter gates.
