Chapter 4 - Secrets in the Sanctuary

Weeks turned into months, and the atmosphere within the heavily guarded walls of the Rossi estate underwent a quiet revolution.
Leo blossomed. His thin limbs grew round and healthy; his pale skin took on a golden glow, and his silent whimpers were replaced by rich, ringing baby laughter that echoed through the marble hallways. He became entirely attached to Hunter, crying whenever she was out of his sight for more than a few minutes.
In turn, Hunter found a strange, healing sanctuary in the house of violence. Caring for Leo healed the gaping wound left by Lily’s death. But it was not just Leo who drew her in; it was the brooding, quiet titan who watched over them both.
Lorenzo began spending less time at his corporate front offices in Manhattan and more time working from his home study. He would often drop by the nursery under the pretense of checking reports, only to spend hours watching Hunter read to Leo or sing soft lullabies.
For Lorenzo, Hunter was a revelation. She was unbothered by his immense wealth and unfazed by his terrifying reputation. She treated him not as a mob lord, but as a man bearing heavy burdens. For the first time since Sophia’s death, Lorenzo felt the crushing weight in his chest lighten.
However, the world outside the estate gates remained ruthless.
One rainy evening, while Hunter was putting Leo to bed, Lorenzo’s right-hand man, Marco, knocked urgently on the study door. Lorenzo stepped inside, his expression instantly darkening into the cold mask of the Don.
"What is it, Marco?"
"We found him, Boss," Marco said, handing over a folder. "Tommy Vance. The ex-boyfriend who pushed Miss Higgins down the stairs and caused her baby's death. He’s been hiding in a gambling den in Atlantic City, running up debts with the Moretti remnants."
Lorenzo opened the folder, staring at the photograph of the man who had inflicted such cruel suffering on the woman currently sleeping under his roof. A quiet, terrifying rage built within Lorenzo's chest—a rage far more personal than any business dispute.
"Does he know where she is?" Lorenzo asked quietly.
"No. He thinks she fled the state," Marco replied. "But he’s desperate. He's trying to trade information about Hunter's family to clear his debt with our enemies."

Lorenzo closed the folder with a sharp snap. "Bring him to the docks. Do not let Hunter know a single detail about this."
"Understood, Don Lorenzo."
