Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Blood Oath

By sunrise, the third floor of the Rossi estate had been transformed. Dr. Halloran was summoned back to the mansion under heavy guard. Expecting to pronounce the child dead, the doctor stood dumbfounded as he monitored Leo’s vitals. The baby’s blood sugar had stabilized, his hydration levels were climbing, and he was sleeping soundly in Hunter's arms, his small belly full for the first time in his life.
"It's... miraculous," Halloran stammered, checking the monitors thrice. "The psychological trauma of the explosion, combined with a severe instinctual rejection of artificial nutrients... he was grieving, in his own instinctual way. He required human connection and natural nourishment."
Lorenzo stood in the shadows of the room, his eyes never leaving Hunter. The intoxicated night nurse had already been dragged away by his lieutenants, never to work in the state again.
Lorenzo motioned for the doctor to leave. Once the heavy doors closed, he stepped closer to Hunter, who sat rocked gently in the armchairs, nursing Leo once more.
"Who are you?" Lorenzo asked, his tone no longer threatened, but intensely possessive and bewildered.
"Hunter Higgins," she replied softly. "I'm just a maid."
"Maids don't look death in the eye and tell a man with a gun to shut up," Lorenzo noted, his sharp eyes scanning her exhausted face, noticing the faint bruises around her wrists and collarbone that her uniform hadn't fully hidden. "You lost a child recently."
Hunter swallowed hard, looking down at Leo. "Three weeks ago. A stillborn daughter. Lily."
Lorenzo closed his eyes for a brief moment, recognizing the familiar, suffocating aroma of shared grief. "My wife, Sophia... she died in the blast that brought Leo into the world too early. I thought revenge would fill the void. I thought money could buy his life. I was wrong."
He walked over, kneeling beside the chair—a gesture no living person had ever seen Lorenzo Rossi perform. He reached out a thick, scarred hand, gently touching Leo’s tiny fingers, which were wrapped tightly around Hunter’s thumb.
"You saved my heir," Lorenzo said, his voice deep and resonant. "In my world, a debt of life is paid in blood or total protection. As of this moment, you do not clean floors. You do not touch a rag. You are Leo's wet nurse, his guardian, and a protected member of this house. Anyone who tries to harm you will answer to me."
Hunter looked at the powerful mob boss. She saw the dangerous killer the city feared, but beneath it, she saw a broken father who had been ready to burn the world down just to save his boy.

"I don't want your protection, Mr. Rossi," Hunter admitted softly. "I just couldn't let another baby die."
"You have it regardless," Lorenzo replied firmly. "And call me Lorenzo."
