Chapter 9 - Two Worlds Collide

Six months later.

The afternoon sun blazed over a gorgeous seaside park overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The air was warm, filled with the scent of salt water and the sound of children laughing.

Seven-year-old Ben Reed came running across the green lawn, holding a bright red kite higher than his head. "Look, Dad! Look how high it goes!"

Logan sat on a wooden park bench, wearing a clean, dark blue polo shirt, looking relaxed, healthy, and happier than he had been in years. The weary, haunted look in his eyes had been replaced by a quiet, deep peace.

"That's awesome, Ben!" Logan called back, laughing. "Keep running toward the wind!"

A few feet away, Ellie Westbrook was sitting on a picnic blanket, wearing a bright yellow sun hat. She held a sketchpad in her lap, drawing the ocean waves with pastels.

When Ben ran past, she looked up, her face lighting up with a radiant smile.

"Ben!" Ellie called out, her voice clear, confident, and sweet, though still possessing a cute, distinct melodic lilt as she continued her speech therapy. "Watch out for the tree!"

Ben turned just in time, laughing as he dodged a large oak branch, his red kite soaring high into the blue sky.

Claire walked over from the parked SUV, carrying a large picnic basket. She wore a simple white linen dress, her dark hair blowing gently in the sea breeze. There was no corporate ice around her now—only warmth, radiance, and grace.

She sat down on the bench beside Logan, handing him an iced coffee.

"They're getting along well," Claire said, watching Ellie and Ben chase each other toward the shoreline.

"Ben hasn't stopped talking about Ellie since Tuesday," Logan chuckled, taking a sip. "He told me she’s the smartest kid in his grade."

"She is," Claire said softly, her eyes shimmering with affection as she watched her daughter laugh out loud at a seagull trying to steal a potato chip. "And six months ago... I didn't even know what her laugh sounded like."

Claire turned to look at Logan. "How is the new role treating you?"

"It's good," Logan said, looking at her. "Really good. For the first time in three years, I feel like I'm where I'm supposed to be."
