Chapter 5 - The Silent Battle

The sudden, piercing pulse of high-frequency noise sent Vance and his guards to their knees, clutching their ears in agony.
Because Ellie’s ear contained the active phase-canceling device, the screech was completely neutralized inside her head. She saw the men fall, but felt nothing. Logan had pulled noise-canceling earmuffs over Claire’s ears seconds before throwing the device.
In the ensuing chaos, Logan moved like a shadow.
He moved silently across the damp concrete floor, disarming the first guard with a swift sweep of his leg and a disarming wrist-lock. The second guard fired a panicked shot into the ceiling before Logan slammed him against the steel support beam, knocking him unconscious.
Marcus recovered first, lunging at Logan with a tactical knife. "You ruined everything, you little clock-puncher!" Marcus snarled.
Logan parried the blade with his arm guard, stepped inside Marcus’s reach, and delivered two devastating strikes to his midsection, followed by a sweeping throw that slammed the former chief of security onto the hard floor. The knife skittered across the concrete, dropping down an open drain.
Vance scrambled backward toward the heavy steel fire door, his face pale with terror. "You... you don't understand! I have political connections! You can't expose this!"
Claire stepped out from the shadows, her posture regal and uncompromising. She held Marcus’s dropped radio in her hand.
"I don't need political connections, Julian," Claire said, her voice deadly quiet. "I own the network that broadcasts the news in this city. And the police commissioner is already on his way."
Sirens wailed in the distance, their crimson and blue lights flashing through the street-level grates above.
Vance backed into the wall, weeping as police officers swarmed the basement, their weapons drawn.
Logan stepped back into the shadow of the freight elevator, his breathing steady, his job completed. He looked over at Ellie, who was standing beside her mother.

Ellie looked back at him, gave him a sweet, shy smile, and tapped her heart, then pointed at him.
Thank you.
