Chapter 4 - Operative in the Dark

The maintenance corridors of the Westbrook Tower were a labyrinth of exposed pipes, steel mesh walkways, and humming air shafts. High above the city lights, forty floors up, the wind whistled through the external vents.

Logan led Claire and Ellie through the gloom with absolute precision. Years of conducting high-stakes search-and-rescue missions in collapsed structures and blacked-out industrial sites came back to him effortlessly. He was no longer just a seventeen-dollar-an-hour security guard; he was a master tactician navigating hostile territory.

Behind them, the muffled echoes of shouts and heavy footfalls signaled that Marcus’s men were sweeping the upper levels.

"They’ll cut the power to the basement if they figure out where we’re going," Claire whispered breathlessly, holding onto Logan’s tactical belt as they descended a steep iron spiral staircase.

"Let them," Logan replied calmly. "In the dark, I have the advantage."

They reached the sub-basement three levels below street level. The air was damp, smelling of old concrete and grease. The ancient freight elevator sat behind a heavy iron scissor-gate.

Suddenly, a bright beam of tactical light cut through the darkness from the far side of the boiler room.

"Westbrook!" a harsh voice echoed. It was Dr. Julian Vance himself, flanked by three armed men, including a bruised and furious Marcus. Vance was in his late fifties, impeccably dressed in a bespoke suit, but his eyes were wild with desperation.

"Claire, stop this nonsense!" Vance shouted, his voice bouncing off the concrete walls. "You are hysterical! The guard is a rogue operative with a criminal past—he's kidnapping you!"

Claire stepped in front of Ellie, her spine straight, her eyes blazing with a mother's fierce fury. "You lied to me for six years, Julian! You muted my child! You stole her voice so you could control my family’s legacy!"

Vance’s aristocratic calm cracked. "She’s a child! She didn't need that money! The board needed it—I needed it! Hand her over, Claire, or none of you leave this basement alive!"

"Logan," Claire whispered, her voice trembling. "What do we do?"

Logan didn't answer with words. He silently reached into his tactical vest, pulled out a small acoustic diagnostic tool he carried for security sweeps, and tossed it high into the overhead electrical junction box.

An intense, high-frequency screech echoed through the concrete cavern, instantly blinding the security guards’ night-vision equipment and overwhelming their senses.
