Chapter 8 - A Father's Sacrifice Recognized

An hour later, as Ellie rested comfortably, listening with wide-eyed fascination to the gentle sound of rain tapping against the windowpane, Claire walked out into the quiet hallway where Logan was standing by the window, making a phone call.

"Hey, buddy," Logan was saying softly into his phone. "Yeah, Dad’s running a little late today. I’m sorry I missed breakfast. I’ll make up for it tonight, okay? Pancakes for dinner. Promise. I love you, Ben."

He hung up, rubbing his exhausted eyes, and turned to find Claire standing there, watching him with a gentle, warm expression.

"Your son?" she asked softly.

"Yeah. Ben. He's seven," Logan said with a self-conscious smile. "He’s a good kid. Keeps me grounded."

"You risked your life, your job, and your safety for my daughter last night, Logan," Claire said, walking up to him. "Why? Most people in your position would have stayed at their post. They wouldn't have questioned the doctors. They wouldn't have fought Marcus."

Logan looked down at his calloused hands. "When my wife passed away three years ago, I felt like the world had gone completely quiet. I spent nights sitting in the dark, wishing I could hear her voice one more time. When I looked at Ellie last night... I saw a little girl who was trapped in that same quiet, and a mother who was losing her child inch by inch. No one deserves to live in the dark when you have the power to turn on the light."

Claire felt a profound ache in her chest—not of sadness, but of deep, overwhelming admiration.

She pulled a leather folder from under her arm. "Julian Vance and Marcus Doyle have been formally arrested. The police found millions in offshore accounts tied to Vance's firm. He will spend the rest of his life in prison."

She opened the folder.

"This is the security firm that manages my corporate holdings across thirty countries," Claire continued. "As of eight o'clock this morning, I bought out the parent company. And I am creating a new position: Global Director of Corporate Protection and Child Safety Initiatives."

She looked straight into Logan’s eyes.

"The salary is six hundred thousand dollars a year, with full health coverage, flexible hours so you can drop off and pick up Ben from school every single day, and a permanent trust established for Ben's college education."

Logan blinked, stunned. "Ms. Westbrook... I can't take that. I didn't do this for money."

"I know you didn't," Claire said softy, reaching out to clasp his hand. "That’s precisely why you’re the only man on earth I trust to hold the keys to my family's safety."
