Chapter 6 - The Surgical Room

At 3:00 AM, the top floor of Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital was completely locked down under police protection. The finest neuro-otologist in the nation, Dr. Evelyn Reyes, had been awakened and rushed in by private helicopter at Claire’s personal request.
Inside the surgical prep room, Claire paced back and forth, her hands clasped tightly. Logan stood near the door, uniform torn, dirt on his coat, ready to slip away unnoticed back to his son.
"Logan," Claire called out, stopping him as he moved toward the exit. "Where are you going?"
"My shift ended hours ago, Ms. Westbrook," Logan said softly. "My son, Ben... my sister is watching him, but I need to get home to wake him up for school."
Claire walked up to him. The cold, impenetrable billionaire from the ballroom was completely gone. In her eyes was profound gratitude, mixed with a deep respect.
"You saved my daughter's life tonight. You saw what thirteen world-class specialists were blind to. Please... stay until she wakes up. I want you to be there."
Logan hesitated, thinking of his small apartment, the unpaid electric bill sitting on his counter, and the vast gap between her world and his. But when he looked through the glass window at Ellie, who was being prepped for the delicate fifteen-minute procedure, he nodded.
"I'll stay."
The procedure was excruciatingly simple yet nerve-wracking. Under high-powered microscopic guidance, Dr. Reyes used a specialized pair of non-magnetic micro-forceps to gently slip past the ear canal.
With extreme care, Dr. Reyes withdrew a tiny, cylinder-shaped object no larger than a grain of rice. It glinted under the surgical lamps—a masterwork of illegal micro-engineering designed to ruin a child's life for profit.

"It’s out," Dr. Reyes announced softly. "The eardrum is completely intact. The surrounding tissue is healthy. The moment the local anesthetic wears off... her hearing should be fully restored."
Claire burst into tears, covering her face with her hands. Logan reached out instinctively, placing a steady, warm hand on her shoulder. She turned and pressed her forehead against his chest, weeping out years of silent grief and buried guilt.
