Chapter 7 - The First Sound

The morning sun filtered softly through the blinds of the private recovery room, casting warm, golden stripes across the crisp white bedsheets.

Ellie lay propped up on plush pillows, a small white bandage covering her left ear. Her eyelids fluttered, then opened slowly.

Claire sat on the edge of the bed, gripping Ellie’s small hand tightly. Logan stood at the foot of the bed, leaning against the wall, watching quietly.

Dr. Reyes stepped forward, holding a small wooden tuning fork. "Ellie," the doctor said softly, shaping her words clearly so the child could read her lips. "I am going to strike this. Let me know if you feel... or hear anything."

The doctor gently tapped the tuning fork against her palm. A soft, clear, resonant tone filled the quiet room.

Ellie’s entire body went rigid.

Her eyes widened in absolute shock. She didn't look at the doctor’s lips. She looked at the wooden fork in the doctor's hand, then turned her head wildly toward the window, where a tiny sparrow was chirping on the sill.

She gasped—a sharp, ragged intake of air.

"Ellie?" Claire whispered, her voice trembling violently. "Ellie... sweetie?"

Ellie turned her head slowly back to her mother. Her eyes filled with enormous, sparkling tears. She touched her own chest, then reached out to touch her mother's lips.

"Mom... my?" Ellie stammered, her voice raspy, unformed, and cracked from six years of disuse, but unmistakably clear. "Mom... my?"

It was the first sound eight-year-old Ellie Westbrook had ever understood. Not music, not laughter, nor the birds outside her window.

It was her mother crying out her name in pure, unadulterated joy.

"Yes! Yes, baby! It's Mommy!" Claire sobbed, pulling Ellie into a ferocious, weeping embrace. "I’m here! I’m here! You can hear me!"

Ellie buried her face in her mother’s neck, weeping tears of pure wonder as the world burst into a symphony of rich, beautiful sounds—the hum of the air conditioner, the rustle of sheets, the rhythmic beep of the monitor, and her mother’s sweet, loving voice repeating her name over and over again.
