Chapter 8 - Trial by Fire

In the weeks following the downfall of the Valli family, the Castiglione estate underwent a complete transformation. Renzo stripped away the cold, imposing symbols of his former life—the surveillance towers were replaced with security measures that did not make the grounds look like a fortress, and the dark marble halls were warmed with light, art, and the sounds of children playing.
A formal tribunal of regional leaders gathered in Rome to finalize the restructuring of the territories. Renzo attended the summit, not to expand his criminal empire, but to announce its permanent conversion into a legitimate commercial conglomerate.
"The era of bloodshed and stolen bloodlines is over," Renzo declared to the assembled bosses. "Castiglione Enterprises will transition entirely to legitimate shipping, real estate, and philanthropic foundations. Anyone who attempts to drag my name back into the underworld will face the full weight of both the law and my resources."
No one disputed his declaration. Renzo had proven that his strength was absolute, but his willingness to abandon violence in favor of protecting his family made him untouchable.

When he returned home that evening, he walked into the bright kitchen. Carmen was preparing dinner, while Ada was sitting at the wooden table helping Leo with his reading homework. Baby Mateo was resting peacefully in a cradle beside the window, bathed in the gold light of the setting sun.
Renzo stood in the doorway, observing the scene. For the first time in his forty-eight years, he felt complete peace.
