Chapter 2 - The Bloodline’s Echo

Ada stood tall despite her dripping hair, her voice steady as she recounted the night's events. "I was bringing the kitchen waste to the external bin behind the pantry," she said, cradling the small bundle against her sweater. "The rain was heavy, but the lid was slightly askew. I heard the sound before I saw the blanket. It wasn't the sound of an abandoned stray; it was a rhythmic, choked cry. When I opened the bin, he was wrapped in this cream cashmere blanket, placed directly on top of the black refuse bags. Someone put him there recently—within minutes of me stepping out."

Renzo Castiglione stared at the child, then at the engraved bracelet resting beside his legal documents. The serial code stamped onto the faded plastic matched the precise alphanumeric sequence from six years prior—the code reserved for his deceased wife’s medical file at Santa Rosalia. Yet the infant in Ada’s arms was clearly only hours old. The math made no logical sense unless the tragedy six years ago was not an ending, but the beginning of a grander deception.

Chiara Valli took a step forward, her hand reaching out toward Renzo’s arm with practiced tenderness. "Renzo, please, let the security detail handle this. The child is cold, and this little girl is clearly hysterical. We should call the police or an ambulance immediately rather than listening to kitchen staff."

Renzo did not look at Chiara. He reached down and gently pulled back the edge of the blanket. On the baby’s left shoulder was a distinct, dark birthmark shaped like an inverted crescent—the exact genetic mark carried by three generations of Castiglione men, including Renzo himself.

"Carmen," Renzo said, his voice dropping to an icy register that made every guard in the room freeze. "Take your daughter and the baby up to the master suite. Secure the floor. No one enters or leaves without my personal word."

Chiara’s eyes widened slightly. "The master suite? Renzo, that is absurd. You are bringing an unidentified child into your private quarters?"

"He is identified," Renzo replied softly, his gaze locking onto Chiara with lethal focus. "And he is not remaining in the dark any longer."
