Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Web
Returning to Italy with Leo, Renzo brought his family back together under one roof. The newborn infant—whom Renzo formally named Mateo—was recovering rapidly under the care of top pediatricians and Carmen Bellini.
However, the removal of Chiara Valli created a power vacuum in the northern syndicate. Don Ernesto Valli, Chiara’s father and the elder patriarch of the Valli family, refused to accept his daughter’s disgrace and the loss of the Castiglione fortune. He mobilized his remaining loyalists to launch a final, desperate offensive against Renzo’s stronghold.
Ada, now recognized within the household not merely as a maid’s daughter but as an essential guardian of the family, spent her afternoons showing Leo around the estate. Despite the lingering dangers, the estate grounds felt lighter, stripped of the oppressive paranoia that had reigned for years.
"Your father is very powerful," Ada told Leo one afternoon as they sat near the fish pond. "But he was very sad before you came back."
"Was he?" Leo asked, watching the gold carp swim beneath the surface.
"He never smiled," Ada said firmly. "Now he smiles when he looks at you and baby Mateo. That means you made him human again."
Their quiet moment was interrupted by the sudden ringing of the perimeter alarm system. Marco’s voice cut through the courtyard speakers: "Code Red. All personnel to primary defensive positions. Perimeter breach at the northern gate."
Renzo emerged from the main house immediately, his face set in stone. He swept Leo and Ada up, guiding them quickly toward the reinforced subterranean safe room beneath the study.

"Stay here with your mother and Mateo," Renzo commanded Ada, looking her dead in the eye. "You kept him safe once. Keep them safe now until I come back."
"I will, sir," Ada replied without hesitation.
