Chapter 9 - Healing the Scars

For Mason, the transformation in our home was immediate. The dark, anxious cloud that had settled over his young life lifted. We sat down with him to explain that none of what happened was his fault, and we thanked him for his bravery.

"You saved our family, buddy," Daniel told him one evening, holding Mason close in a warm hug. "You were brave when I was being blind."

Mason smiled, the tension leaving his shoulders for the first time in months. "I just wanted us to be happy again, Dad."

To make up for the lost time, we took a family vacation to the Oregon coast—a place we had always loved. Away from the stresses of work and the memories of the past few months, we reconnected under the open sky, walking along the damp sand and listening to the waves.

Daniel brought a new camera, and for the first time in a year, our family photo album was filled with genuine smiles instead of polite, strained poses. I watched my husband play tag with our son along the shoreline, his laughter ringing out clear and light, free from the heavy burden he had been carrying.
