Chapter 8 - The Road to Reconciliation

Removing the source of the poison was only the first step; cleaning the venom out of our marriage took time, effort, and honesty.
The day after Barbara left, Daniel made an appointment for marriage counseling. We sat on a therapy couch twice a week, unraveling the subtle ways emotional manipulation can erode trust. Daniel learned how his own childhood need for his mother's approval had made him vulnerable to her gaslighting, and he took full responsibility for failing to shield me.
"I let her make me doubt the person who loved me most," Daniel admitted during one emotional session. "I will spend the rest of my life making sure you never feel unsafe in your own home again."

I had to learn to forgive, too. It wasn't easy to erase the memory of harsh words and cold looks, but seeing Daniel’s sincere remorse, his active effort to rebuild our life, and his complete devotion to making things right made healing possible.
We instituted a new rule in our home: absolute transparency, no secrets, and no letting outside voices come between our decisions.
