Chapter 4 - Digital Footprints

By morning, the warm atmosphere of our once-happy household was completely replaced by a clinical determination to uncover the full truth. Daniel took a day off work, and together we sat down at the kitchen counter with our laptops and financial accounts.

When Barbara moved in, she claimed she had sold her condo in Arizona and was waiting for the escrow funds to clear before finding her own place. She had asked Daniel to handle her daily expenses in the meantime, playing the role of a penniless, vulnerable widow.

However, as Daniel dug into the shared accounts and reviewed the credit card statements his mother had persuaded him to open for her "emergencies," he found alarming discrepancies.

Thousands of dollars had been transferred to an unfamiliar account over the last sixty days. When Daniel called his bank’s fraud division, the manager confirmed that the transfers were authorized using his mother's device, routed to a private investment fund registered under Barbara's name in Nevada.

She hadn't lost her money in Arizona. She had liquidated her assets, put them in a private trust, and was draining Daniel’s savings under the guise of being a dependent elder.

"She wasn't broke," Daniel said, his voice cold with betrayal. "She was draining us dry so I would be completely dependent on her decision-making, while isolating me from you."

I held his hand, feeling the tremor in his fingers. The realization that his own mother had viewed him not as a son to love, but as an asset to control, was a wound far deeper than any argument we had ever had.
