Chapter 5 - The Web of Deceit

When Barbara finally emerged from the guest room at noon, perfectly coiffed and wearing an expression of aggrieved dignity, she found Daniel and me sitting together at the dining room table, surrounded by printouts of bank statements, phone logs, and property records.

"Daniel, dear," she began, adopting her frail elder persona. "I hope you’ve come to your senses. Children often misunderstand adult conversations, and it’s deeply cruel to let a child spy on his own family."

"Sit down, Mother," Daniel said calmly.

"I will not be interrogated in my own son’s home—"

"I said sit down," he repeated, his voice dropping an octave.

Reluctantly, Barbara sat, pulling her cardigan tightly around herself. "If this is about those ridiculous recordings—"

"It's about the seventy-five thousand dollars you've transferred out of our emergency fund into your trust in Nevada," I spoke up, sliding a printed ledger across the polished wood toward her.

Barbara’s eyes scanned the numbers, and for the second time in twenty-four hours, her composure crumbled. The fragile old woman vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating woman whose schemes had been laid bare.

"You don't understand how the real world works, Laura," she snapped, abandoning her sweet voice entirely. "Daniel works hard for his money. You spend it on nonsense. I am securing his future."

"By ruining his marriage?" Daniel interjected, leaning forward. "By making me scream at my wife over a box of cereal? By manipulating your own grandson into feeling unsafe in his own home?"
