Chapter 3 - The Tablet’s Secret

The revelation did not clear the air immediately; instead, it threw our home into chaos. Barbara attempted to claim the recording was fabricated, claiming AI software could fake voices now. But the sheer specificity of her phone call left no room for doubt. Daniel ordered his mother to go to her guest room, his voice deathly quiet—a tone I hadn't heard from him since the day his father passed away.

Late that night, after Mason was finally tucked into bed with an extra blanket and a promise that everything was going to be alright, Daniel sat on the edge of our bed with his head buried in his hands.

"I'm sorry," he choked out, shoulders heaving with silent sobs. "Laura, my God... what have I done to you?"

I stood by the doorway, torn between deep resentment and deep pity. The emotional scars of the past three months couldn't vanish with a single apology. "How could you believe her, Daniel? Over me? Over five years of marriage?"

"She made me feel like I was protecting our family," he whispered, looking up with bloodshot eyes. "She told me you were unhappy, that you were looking for a way out, that you were talking to an old ex online. Every time you left your phone face down, every time you looked tired, she had a narrative ready to explain it. I was so afraid of losing you that I started listening to the poison."

"You almost lost me because you did listen," I replied firmly.

We spent the rest of the night going through Mason’s tablet. Our son hadn't just recorded one call. Over the past three weeks, feeling the growing tension between his parents, Mason had used a basic voice-memo app whenever he heard his grandmother talking on the patio or in the kitchen when we weren't home. There were over a dozen files. Together, they painted a deliberate, ruthless plan to tear our marriage apart and secure financial dependence on Daniel.
