Chapter 7 - Unmasking the Arizona Lie

The truth about Arizona came out fully over the next forty-eight hours through our attorney's inquiries. Barbara hadn't just sold her condo; she had been forced out of her retirement community after trying a similar scheme on her neighbors, stirring up malicious rumors to turn family members against each other over money.

Faced with the legal choice of facing formal fraud charges or packing her bags immediately, Barbara chose to leave.

On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, a moving van pulled up to our driveway. Daniel watched from the living room window as his mother packed her belongings. He didn't offer to help, nor did he yell. The anger had burned out, leaving behind a solemn, quiet resolve to repair his real family.

Before she got into her taxi, Barbara turned to look at the house one last time. She looked smaller now, stripped of the malice that had fed her energy for months. She looked at Daniel, hoping for a final moment of filial guilt.

Daniel simply stood on the porch, holding my hand firmly in his, with Mason standing safely between us. He gave her a single, firm nod of goodbye, closing the door as the taxi pulled away.
