Chapter 6 - A New Dawn in the Hospital Room

Back at the hospital, the atmosphere had transformed entirely. The new immunotherapy treatment began on a Tuesday morning. I sat by Claire’s bed, holding her small, warm hand as the clear fluid flowed steadily through a secure, double-checked line.

Claire smiled, her cheeks showing a faint hint of natural color for the first time in months. "Mommy, my tummy doesn't hurt as much today," she said softly.

"That's because you're getting stronger, sweet angel," I replied, kissing her forehead. "And soon, we're going to take a big trip."

"Where?" she asked, her eyes wide with excitement.

"Anywhere you want. The mountains, the ocean, or maybe even to see the snow."

The legal battle ahead would be long, but the emotional fog had lifted. Divorce papers had already been filed, granting me sole custody, the house, and all remaining assets without contest, given Daniel’s incarcerated status and criminal admissions. He had lost his freedom, his reputation, his child, and his money.

Dr. Hayes walked into the room with a wide smile, checking Claire’s charts. "Her white blood cell count is responding exceptionally well to the new protocol," he announced. "If she keeps progressing at this rate, she'll be well enough to go home by next month."

I looked at my daughter, laughing quietly as she played a game on her tablet. The nightmare was ending, and our real life was finally beginning.
