Chapter 5 - The Arraignment and the Face of Betrayal

The district attorney’s office moved swiftly. One week after their arrest, Daniel and Rachel were brought into the municipal courthouse for their formal arraignment. I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Detective Vance and a victims' rights advocate.
The courtroom doors opened, and they were led in wearing orange jumpsuits and handcuffs. Daniel looked gaunt, his expensive suit replaced by institutional cotton. His eyes searched the room and locked onto mine. For a brief second, a flicker of desperate entitlement crossed his face—as if he expected me to stand up and bail him out of this mess.
Rachel followed behind him, weeping softly into her cuffed hands, playing the victim until the very end.
When the judge read the formal charges—Attempted First-Degree Murder, Conspiracy to Commit Fraud, and Tampering with Life-Support Equipment—the courtroom fell into dead silence. Their defense attorney tried to argue for a reduced bail, pointing to Rachel’s pregnancy.

The prosecutor stepped forward, holding up a printed stack of the recovered chat logs. "Your Honor, the defendants did not merely harbor a casual dispute. They calculated the exact cost of a dying child's medical care against an inheritance, plotting an artificial medical crisis to expedite her death. Flight risk is extreme, and society demands protection from such calculated malice."
The judge denied bail completely. As the bailiff led them away, Daniel muttered something furious under his breath, while Rachel buried her face in her arms, realizing at last that no amount of manipulation could save them now.
