Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm Outside the Walls
While Claire slept peacefully under round-the-clock protection, the outside world began to react to the earthquake Daniel and Rachel had triggered. The police detained both of them overnight, denying bail due to the severity of the charges—attempted murder, conspiracy, and medical tampering.
Word travels fast in elite suburban circles. By morning, Daniel’s corporate firm, Vanguard Holdings, had received anonymous copies of the police report and the chat logs. His CEO wasted no time. By noon, an official press release went public: Daniel Sterling had been terminated immediately for gross corporate and personal misconduct.
Rachel’s employer, an upscale boutique marketing agency, followed suit. Her social media accounts vanished within hours as angry comments flooded her pages, calling out her betrayal of her sick niece and her married brother-in-law.
My phone buzzed incessantly with missed calls from our extended family. My mother-in-law, a proud woman who had always favored Daniel, called in hysterics, demanding to know if the news was a lie. I answered her call just once.
