Chapter 2 - The Hospital Interrogation and the Shield of Law
The sterile smell of the hospital corridor grew heavy as two uniformed police officers stepped through the double doors. Detective Vance, a sharp-eyed man with graying temples, accompanied them. He walked straight toward me, his notepad already open.
"Mrs. Miller?" he asked, his voice steady and professional. "Hospital security and the attending nurse informed us of a physical altercation and potential criminal conspiracy involving tampering with medical equipment."
I nodded, my hands still trembling from the adrenaline. I handed him my phone, unlocked and displaying the crisp, undeniable screenshots of the chat logs between Daniel and Rachel. "They weren't just neglecting her," I said, my voice cracking with suppressed fury. "They planned to murder my daughter to steal her medical trust."
Detective Vance scrolled through the images. His expression darkened with every second. He motioned to the other officers, who immediately moved toward the glass-walled consultation room where Daniel and Rachel were being held.
Through the glass, I watched Daniel stand up, gesturing wildly and trying to intimidate the officers. Rachel sat behind him, clutching her purse, her face pale. They thought their social standing, Daniel’s corporate position, and Rachel's innocent facade would protect them. They didn't understand the gravity of what they had captured in writing.
Detective Vance stepped back out and placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. "We are seizing their phones under a judicial warrant extension for attempted homicide and conspiracy. You and your daughter are safe here. I have posted a guard outside Claire’s new room."

I walked into Claire’s temporary recovery room. My sweet girl looked up at me with tired, trusting eyes. "Mommy, why were Daddy and Aunt Rachel yelling?" she whispered.
I brushed a stray curl from her forehead, smiling through my tears. "Nothing you need to worry about, sweetheart. Mommy is right here. Nobody will ever hurt you again."
