Chapter 9 - The First Birthday and Full Circle

One year later, the Vance estate was transformed into a wonderland of white roses, twinkling fairy lights, and cheerful laughter.

It was my daughter’s first birthday.

The lawn was filled with close friends, trusted colleagues, and esteemed family friends who had watched us rebuild our lives from the ashes of a nightmare. There were no fake smiles, no forced subservience, and no fear—only genuine warmth and celebration.

My daughter, little Clara Vance, ran across the manicured green lawn in a tiny white dress, chasing a colorful soap bubble with a delightful giggle that melted everyone's heart.

I sat under the shade of a grand oak tree, sipping iced lemonade, watching her with a heart full of boundless gratitude.

Julian walked up behind me, placing a light, warm cashmere shawl over my shoulders. He sat down in the adjacent wicker chair, holding a small silver frame containing a new family portrait.

"She looks more like you every day," Julian observed softly, watching Clara laugh as she caught a bubble in her tiny hand.

"She has your stubborn streak, though," I teased, smiling up at him. "She refused to go to sleep last night until I read her favorite book three times."

Julian chuckled, a rich, warm sound. "Good. A Vance should always know what she wants."

I looked out across the lawn, thinking of how far I had come from that dark, freezing kitchen floor just a little over two years ago. I had lost a toxic marriage, a fake family, and a life built on fear—but in return, I had reclaimed my freedom, my dignity, my daughter, and an unshakeable bond with the only father I had ever truly known.

"Do you ever think about them?" I asked quietly, not needing to name names.

Julian took a sip of his drink, his eyes remaining calm and steady as he looked out at the horizon.

"Never," Julian replied smoothly. "They exist in the past, Elena. And the past is a locked room that no one has the key to anymore."
