Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

By noon, the news had spread through the city's financial and social elite like wildfire: The Vance family has declared war.

Victor, Helena, Raul, and Nora were summoned—not by police officers, but by armed bailiffs—to appear before a special private arbitration hearing held on the top floor of the Vance Tower, a towering fifty-story monolith of glass and steel in the heart of downtown.

They were forced to ride the service elevator, crammed into the small, metallic box like common criminals. When the doors slid open, they stepped out onto a polished marble floor that stretched endlessly toward a massive floor-to-ceiling glass wall overlooking the city.

Waiting for them at the end of the long mahogany table was Julian Vance.

Standing behind him were six high-powered corporate attorneys, each holding thick, leather-bound folders filled with financial indictments, criminal affidavits, and property seizures.

"Sit," Julian commanded. His voice brooked no argument.

Raul collapsed into the nearest chair, his hands shaking uncontrollably. Helena glared at the floor, too proud to look up, but trembling beneath her designer jacket. Nora was openly weeping mascara down her cheeks.

Victor swallowed hard, trying to summon a shred of his former arrogance. "Mr... Mr. Vance. This is a misunderstanding. Elena is my wife—"

"Quiet," Julian said, lifting a single finger.

The word carried such absolute authority that Victor snapped his mouth shut instantly.

Julian stood up, buttoning his jacket slowly. He walked around the table until he was standing directly behind Victor’s chair, leaning down so his lips were close to Victor’s ear.

"You had one job," Julian whispered, his voice venomous. "You were supposed to cherish her. You were supposed to protect her. Instead, you starved her, you humiliated her, and you raised a weapon against my daughter and my unborn grandchild."

"We... we didn't know she was your daughter!" Helena blurted out, panic cracking her voice. "She never told us! She said she was an orphan!"

Julian straightened up and looked at Helena with absolute disgust.

"She didn't tell you because she was ashamed of your greed, and she wanted to see if you could love her for who she was, not who her family was. But you couldn't. You treated her like a slave in your own home."

Julian tapped the table with his knuckles.

"Here is your reality," Julian announced clearly. "As of two minutes ago, Raul’s shipping company has been liquidated to pay off its debts. Your home has been foreclosed upon by my holding company. Your bank accounts have a balance of zero. Every single asset, car, and piece of jewelry you own has been seized under court orders for damages and medical compensation."

May you like

Helena gasped, clutching her chest. "You can't do that! That's illegal!"

"I own the judges who signed the warrants," Julian replied coldly. "And by tomorrow morning, you will be evicted from the county jail holding cells into the public streets, carrying nothing more than the clothes on your backs."
