Chapter 6 - Healing in the Sanctuary

Far away from the cold concrete of the detention center, inside the private recovery wing of the Vance family estate overlooking the ocean, the world was quiet, warm, and safe.

I lay propped up against a mountain of goose-down pillows, watching the afternoon sunlight dance across the waves through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors. My body still ached in places, the purple bruises fading slowly into a soft yellow, but the heavy, suffocating terror that had gripped my chest for three long years was entirely gone.

The door clicked open softly, and Julian walked in, carrying a small silver tray with a bowl of steaming chicken soup and a glass of fresh orange juice.

"How are we feeling this afternoon, Dr. Vance?" Julian asked with a gentle smile, setting the tray on my lap.

I smiled back, taking a small sip of the soup. "Better every day, Uncle. The doctors say the baby is developing normally and completely unaffected by the trauma."

"Good," Julian said, pulling up a chair and sitting beside the bed. "Because I had a consultation with the legal team this morning. The divorce papers have been finalized by emergency judicial decree. Victor signed them this morning in his jail cell—he didn't have much of a choice, considering his alternative was facing an extra ten years for corporate fraud tied to his father's failed businesses."

I let out a long breath I felt like I had been holding for years. "Is it really over? Is he completely out of my life?"

"Permanently," Julian assured me, placing his hand gently over mine. "He will spend the next two decades reflecting on his mistakes behind very thick bars. And his family will never be in a position to approach you, contact you, or even look in your direction again. They have been permanently restrained by federal order."

"Thank you, Julian," I whispered, tears of gratitude welling in my eyes. "If I hadn't sent that message..."

"You survived because you are strong," Julian corrected me firmly, looking straight into my eyes. "You endured hell, Elena, and you protected your child until the very last second. You are a Vance. Never forget that."

Just then, the door opened wider, and a nurse walked in carrying a stack of brightly colored baby clothes and a bouquet of white lilies sent by my closest friends from university—friends whom Victor had forbidden me from seeing for years, but who had immediately rushed to my side the moment they heard I was safe.

The cage was broken. The nightmare was over. And a brand-new life was waiting for us just around the corner.
