Chapter 8 - The Staged Confession

Three months later, facing overwhelming evidence—including video footage, financial records, digital trail evidence, and Lawson’s full confession in exchange for a plea deal—Rachel’s legal team broke down.
In a closed-door deposition room at the district courthouse, Rachel formally requested a plea agreement to avoid a thirty-year mandatory prison sentence.
I sat across from her at the long oak table, accompanied by Clara Sterling and ADA Hayes.
Rachel looked hollow, her cheeks sunken, her hair unkempt. She wore the orange prison jumpsuit, her wrists bound by heavy chains.
"I will sign the full confession," Rachel wept, her voice trembling. "I will sign away all rights to the house, the company, and... and Lily. Just please don't make me face a jury trial."
"You need to state on the record what you did to Lily," ADA Hayes demanded sternly.
Rachel choked back a sob, looking at the table. "Marcus told me to make the bruises look convincing. When Lily wouldn't lie to the doctors, I... I grabbed her shoulders and shoved her into the door frame. I told her her father would be locked up forever if she said anything."
Hearing those words out loud sent a cold spike through my heart, but it was the final, undeniable confession needed to close the case forever.

"Sign the papers," I said, my voice steady and cold.
She signed every document, relinquishing all legal, financial, and maternal claims.
