Chapter 3 - The Storage Unit Secret

By dawn, Lily was resting safely in a private room under protective custody while my legal representative and Detective Jenkins secured a search warrant for Midwest Vault Storage, Unit 412.
I accompanied Jenkins and two patrol officers to the storage facility on the outskirts of town. The morning sky was gray and heavy with impending rain.
When the locksmith cut the heavy brass padlock on Unit 412 and rolled up the corrugated steel door, the truth of what my wife had been planning finally stood revealed.
Inside were stack after stack of plastic totes, hard drives, and legal boxes taken from my home office. But more ominously, there were filing cabinets from my company, Mercer Tech Solutions.
"What was she doing with company files?" Jenkins asked, shining her flashlight into the gloomy unit.
"She wasn't just planning a divorce," I realized, stepping inside and opening a metal file box. "She was setting up a corporate takeover."
Deep inside the box were forged bank statements showing offshore accounts under my name containing millions of dollars in embezzled funds—funds that didn't exist. Attached were pre-signed transfer deeds handing over ownership of my software patents to a shell company registered in Panama under Vance’s brother’s name.
Rachel hadn't just wanted custody or the house. Vance and Rachel had designed a scheme to ruin me criminally, strip me of my company, frame me for child abuse so I would lose all visitation, and seize every dollar I had built over twelve years of hard labor.
"Look at this," Officer Miller called out from the back of the storage unit.
He was holding a black velvet pouch. Inside was a heavy iron key and a hidden audio recorder.
I hit play on the recorder. Vance’s voice filled the small storage room:

“If the kid doesn’t play along with the abuse story, hit her again or tell her Daniel will be put in prison forever. The child protection workers always believe the mother first. Once Daniel is booked, the judge will sign the emergency freeze on his assets.”
My knuckles turned white. Tears of rage filled my eyes. They hadn't just plotted against my finances; they had systematically terrorized my innocent seven-year-old daughter to guarantee their payday.
