Chapter 2 - The Unraveling Web

The chill in my veins ran deeper than the cold Kansas City night. Watching Mrs. Alvarez’s footage on my phone, every piece of my reality fragmented into sharp, dangerous shards. The man in the video wasn’t just Rachel’s attorney—he was Marcus Vance, a high-profile family law strategist known for brutal, high-asset divorces. And there he was on my driveway, supervising a middle-of-the-night removal of my life.
I looked down at Lily. She had curled into my lap on the hospital waiting room chair, her soft breathing rhythmic against my chest. Her small hand still clutched the battered velvet ear of her plush rabbit.
"Mr. Mercer?"
I looked up. Detective Sarah Jenkins from the Special Victims Unit was standing above me, her expression grim. Beside her stood the hospital social worker.
"Detective," I said, keeping my voice low so as not to startle Lily. "You need to see this."
I handed her my phone. As the video played, Jenkins’ jaw tightened. The timestamp matched the night before my return—Tuesday at 11:42 PM. On screen, Vance stood near the open trunk of his luxury sedan, pointing toward the garage. Rachel pulled a crying Lily toward the passenger side of a dark gray van. When Lily resisted, Rachel shoved her down onto the concrete steps.
"That's where the shoulder bruises came from," Jenkins murmured, freeze-framing the moment. "She didn't fall off a swing. She was thrown down."
"And look at the van," I said, zooming in on the rear bumper. "There's a logo: Midwest Vault Storage, Unit 412."
Rachel and her lawyer walked into the waiting room lobby at that precise moment, smiling standard corporate smiles. Vance wore a tailored charcoal suit and carried a sleek leather briefcase, perfectly confident.
"Daniel," Vance began in a smooth, practiced tone. "I advise you to turn Lily over to her mother immediately. We have filed an emergency protection order based on your history of domestic volatility—"
"Save it, Counselor," Detective Jenkins interrupted, standing up and flashing her badge. "Marcus Vance, you are under arrest for accessory to child endangerment, obstruction of justice, and illegal entry."
Vance’s polished composure shattered in an instant. "This is absurd! I am her legal counsel—"
"And you were on his driveway at midnight on Tuesday assisting in the assault of a seven-year-old child," Jenkins said coldly, clicking handcuffs around his wrists. "You have the right to remain silent."
Rachel gasped, taking a step back, her face turning pale. "Daniel, please! He made me do it! He said if we didn't frame you, you'd take everything!"

"Don't say another word, Rachel," Vance spat, his voice filled with venom.
As officers led Vance away, Detective Jenkins turned to Rachel. "You're coming with us too, Mrs. Mercer."
