Chapter 7 - Cornered Shadows

While the criminal case against Vance and Rachel was rock-solid, one accomplice remained at large: the private investigator Vance had hired to stalk me and plant the fake evidence in my house.
His name was Rex Lawson, a former disgraced police officer with a reputation for dirty tricks.
One evening, as I was leaving my office building downtown, I noticed a silver SUV tailing me. Lawson was getting desperate. With Vance in jail, Lawson knew he was next on the indictment list, and he wanted the backup hard drives containing his illegal surveillance logs before the FBI found them.
Instead of driving home where Lily was staying safely with my sister, I pulled into the well-lit parking lot of the local police station.
The silver SUV pulled in right behind me, blocking my vehicle. Lawson stepped out, his face shadowed under a baseball cap, a heavy hand resting inside his jacket pocket.
"Mercer," Lawson growled, walking toward my window. "You think you won? Give me the hard drive from Unit 412, or your daughter isn't safe anywhere."
I didn't panic. I rolled down my window just an inch.
"You're too late, Lawson," I said calmly.
Suddenly, floodlights erupted from all sides of the parking lot. Four police cruisers surged forward, blocking Lawson’s SUV. Detective Jenkins and half a dozen armed officers stepped out with weapons drawn.
"Rex Lawson! Drop your weapon and get on the ground now!" Jenkins shouted through a bullhorn.

Lawson froze, realized he had driven straight into an ambush, and dropped to his knees, throwing his hands in the air.
The last piece of the conspiracy had fallen.
