Chapter 8 - The Act of Penance

It was a rainy Tuesday evening, exactly one year after the incident in the hospital room. Elena was preparing to leave her office when her secretary buzzed her.

"Ma'am, there is a man downstairs. He doesn't have an appointment, and he... well, he looks like a regular worker. He refuses to leave until he delivers something to you."

Elena's heart skipped a beat. "Send him up."

The elevator doors opened, and Daniel stepped out. He wasn't wearing an expensive navy suit. He wore a simple, clean flannel shirt and work trousers. His hands were rough from hard work, but his gaze was steady and clear. In his arms, wrapped in a beautiful, hand-knitted blue blanket, was one-year-old Liam.

Daniel walked into his mother's grand office. He didn't look at the expensive art or the luxury view. He looked only at her.

Without a word, Daniel knelt on the plush carpet before his mother. He placed a small, polished wooden box at her feet.

"What is this, Daniel?" Elena asked, her voice trembling despite her best efforts.

"Open it, please, Mom," Daniel said softly.

Elena opened the box. Inside was her original wedding ring—the one she had sold decades ago to pay for his college books. Daniel had spent the last eight months tracking down the pawnshop, tracing the buyers, and working overtime to buy it back.

"I know this doesn't fix the pain I caused you," Daniel said, his voice thick with emotion. "I stood by and let a shallow woman insult the greatest soul I have ever known. I forgot that everything I was, was because of you. I don't want the company, Mom. I don't want the penthouse. I just want my mother back. I want my son to know the incredible woman who raised his father."
