Chapter 5 - Isolation and Reflection

Months passed. Elena did not check on them, though her security team kept a watchful eye from a distance to ensure her grandson, whom she learned was named Liam, was safe and fed.
Without money, the cracks in Daniel and Vanessa's marriage became grand canyons. Vanessa, used to spa days and fine dining, hated the grueling routine of actual motherhood without a team of nannies. Daniel, unable to find a high-paying job due to his public firing, was forced to take a mid-level management position at a local logistics firm, working long, humbling hours for a fraction of his old salary.
One evening, exhausted and covered in sweat, Daniel sat on the small kitchen floor, fixing a broken pipe. Vanessa was out, trying to network with old friends who now ignored her calls.
Liam began to cry in his crib. Daniel dropped his wrench, wiped his hands, and walked into the small nursery. He picked up his son. As he rocked the baby, his eyes fell on a small, glittering object in the corner of his old suitcase: the silver rattle. He had secretly retrieved it from beneath the hospital bed before they were evicted.
As he held the heavy silver toy, memories he had buried under a mountain of wealth and ego came rushing back. He remembered his mother working two jobs, her hands cracked and bleeding from the winter cold, just so he could have a proper coat. He remembered her face when she handed him his college tuition check, smiling through her exhaustion.

He had become a monster, blinded by Vanessa's shallow vanity and his own unearned pride. He began to weep, his tears falling onto his son's blanket.
"I'm so sorry, Mom," he whispered to the empty room. "I'm so sorry."
